RVHS Swim - Week of February 14

Rams,

Here we are…the last week of the season…let’s wrap it up with great focus, energy, and excitement. Saturday’s State Championship meet is going to be a lot of fun.

Swimmers, planning your week with the end in mind is important.  This includes not only your time and effort in the water, but also your nutrition and rest.  Our practices this week will be low on distance and high on execution – focusing on details to get ourselves ready for fast swimming on Saturday.  Keeping the physical levels lower is important, which is why I will reiterate what we said all week last week at practice – PLEASE TAKE THE WEEK OFF FROM YOUR CLUB TEAM PRACTICES.

Taking this time away from the club practice will not only help with the taper, but also give you the sleep that will let your body to rest up and get ready for Saturday’s meet.  It’s the one week that we ask this of you.  Please take our advice.

Your fuel for the week is important too.  Here is a good, brief article on what to think about for food during your taper.  https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/4-dos-and-2-donts-of-eating-on-taper/

We will have an amazing State Championship Meet on Saturday.  Start to prepare yourself now to make that happen.  We will be ready.

All States swimmers will ride the bus to the meet on Saturday.  If you will not be riding the bus back with the team, I need to be notified, in writing, by 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 17.  The bus is leaving RVHS at 5:45 am. I anticipate that we will return to RVHS around midnight, because we will stop for food after the meet on the way home.

Next week (February 24) is our End-of-Season Celebration and we still want more photos for the party. If you have any, please share them by either uploading them to our shared folder -- Pictures - Google Drive or emailing them to Susan Ferguson (sjferg89@gmail.com). She is creating a photo slide show and will have plenty of wallet-size photos for the swimmers to take home. Further, if you have any questions or want to help in any way, please email Susan or give her a call at 703-919-8087.

Here is the schedule for States Swimmers this week:

Only swimmers who are entered in Regionals are to attend practices this week.  We encourage everyone to attend the meet on Friday, however only participating swimmers will ride the bus with the team.  All others will attend as spectators.  Deck space limitations require this.  If you are attending as a spectator, you must arrange your own travel and dismissal from school.

All swimmers participating in Regionals are required to ride the bus with the team to the meet.  If you do not wish to ride the bus back to school with the team after the meet, I need WRITTEN notification (email, please) from a parent by 5:00 pm on Wednesday.

RVHS Swim - Week of January 17

Rams,

When I was growing up, I used to watch “The Wide World of Sports” on ABC every weekend. The opening of the show always talked about the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” We all have experienced both, but rarely does one team get to experience both in the same event as the Girls Team did yesterday.  We should consider ourselves special, I guess.

It was a great meet yesterday. Everyone was fantastic. Stay focused, stay determined, and keep pushing one another hard to be successful.  Believe in yourself and your teammates and we will reach amazing heights.

This is a busy week with a lot of fun racing.  We start things off on Wednesday with our Boys vs Girls meet during practice.  The captains are finalizing their line-ups now and once I have the meet sheet prepared, I will post it for you.  Parents, I am sorry, but we cannot have spectators at this event.  You’ll have to rely on your swimmers’ verbal (and probably social media posts) to appreciate the fun.

This past week, we had 10 points up for grabs for the Boys vs Girls Meet – 5 for the synchronized swimming and 5 for time improvement at yesterday’s meet.  The Girls Team won the synchronized swimming challenge earning 69% of the staff votes.  The Boys Team won the time improvement challenge by improving their times in 62% (!) of their swims.  The Girls improved in 30% of their events.  Both are incredible results.

The current score is Girls 20, Boys 15. We have 5 more points up for grabs in Wednesday’s spirit challenge and then we race on Wednesday evening.

Friday’s meet is our first time facing the Independence Tigers.  They are a strong team and will be a significant challenge to us.  We need to bring our best efforts, our top energy levels, and our confidence in ourselves and each other to win this meet.  It’s going to be a lot of fun.

Then, on Saturday, we’re going to start the day with a parade to celebrate our seniors that will continue all the way to the pool.  Then, we’ll face off against the Heritage Pride to wrap up the regular season and continue our senior celebration during the meet.  More details about the parade, etc. will come within the next couple of days.

Parents – We are short on volunteers for Friday’s meet.  We need two timers.  Please sign up to volunteer.  We cannot hold the meet without your help.

We also need a meet referee for Saturday’s meet - https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a44aeae22aa8-heritage

Here is the schedule for this week:

Week of January 17:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Wednesday:  Boys vs Girls Spirit Day at School – Staff voting

Boys vs Girls Meet at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

***Awarding of the Champion Medallion***

Thursday:  Team meeting in room 1402, 4:15 pm (NO DIVE PRACTICE)

Friday:  Swim Meet vs Independence at Ida Lee.  Warm-ups start at 7:00 pm, so be at the pool ready to swim no later than 6:45 pm

Saturday: Senior Parade – details will be distributed

Swim Meet vs. Heritage at Claude Moore.  Warm-ups start at 12:30 pm, and we will parade there together and arrive no later than 12:15pm.

***Senior Night Celebration***

The line-up for the meets will be posted today/tomorrow.

RVHS Swim -- Week of January 3, 2022

Rams,

Goodbye 2021!  It was a whacky year and our team’s end to it was not what we wanted.  However, it’s done, it’s behind us, and we are moving forward into 2022.  Happy New Year to us!

Now that our “break” is behind us, we are ready for the exciting home stretch of the regular season and then into the championship season.  We can now get back into our regular schedules and get our minds and bodies back in synch.

With only three weeks left in the regular season, it’s time to focus on your goals.  Look at what you are doing.  Are you eating well, getting enough sleep, practicing efficiently, etc.?  If you are not getting the results that you want, what should you change?  Make sure that you are having fun while working toward your goals.

For reference, here is a link to the individual goals that were submitted.

RVHS Swim -- Last Two Weeks of 2021

Rams,

Sometimes things do not go as planned. This week was one of those times. Unfortunately, COVID messed things up for us and we were not able to participate in yesterday’s meet. We were all excited and ready to show the County what we can do. That will come in January and we’ll be ready.

I want everyone to know that Riverside’s administration and LCPS did everything that they could to try to keep us in the meet on Saturday. They tried to complete their work on Friday night to clear us. Unfortunately, they were not able to do so in the limited time that they had. This is no one’s fault. It’s the nature of the environment in which we currently live and operate.  At least 3 other teams were not able to compete on Saturday either.  Bad luck all around.

Now that we have been through this, we know the process and the importance of being diligent. I know that we talk about it at every team meeting and everyone is sick of the masks, social distancing, etc. We want to be back to normal. Unfortunately, the virus is still here, the number of cases is growing, and we must continue to protect ourselves and our families.  Please continue to be safe.

We are cleared to resume all team activities. This include practices, meets, and social events such as our pasta parties.  Therefore, we are back to a normal schedule with practices this week.  As we discussed at our meeting on Thursday, I know that some of you have holiday plans with your families. I hope that everyone will attend all practices but understand if you cannot.

When we return from winter break, we have a 3-week sprint that is the balance of the regular season (4 meets). We’ll be back to our regular team schedule, including practices and pasta parties.  Let’s use this break to rest up, recharge, and get ready for what’s to come.

Here is your schedule for the weeks of December 20 & 27.

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Wednesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Thursday:  OFF

Saturday: Merry Christmas!

Sunday: OFF

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

RVHS Swim - Week of December 13

Rams,

It was another successful week for Riverside Swimming.  We fought through a challenging meet, some illnesses, some mental doldrums, and some physical exhaustion and took care of business on Saturday.  Two dual meets down, four dual meets to go.

This week, we shift gears and look toward our first championship meet of the season.  On Saturday, we have the Loudoun County Invitational meet.  We’ll be competing against all 17 Loudoun County high school teams, and we will show them all what Riverside Swimming is all about.  We are sure to be the most spirited and supportive team there, while simultaneously showing sportsmanship and some incredibly fast swims.  This is going to be fun!

I’ll be sharing Saturday’s line-up soon and will review some of the thoughts behind it at the start of practice tomorrow.  Please note that I will not post this line-up publicly and want you to keep it within the team.  We have been strategic in our work and do not want other teams knowing our entries.  I will email the line-up to you.

Here is your schedule for the week of December 13.

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Wednesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Thursday:  Team meeting, 4:15-5:00 pm; Blocks practice at Ida Lee, 9:30-10:15 pm

Friday:  Pasta Party at Pasta Party at El-Aassar’s – 43231 Canal Creek Place – 6:00 pm

Saturday: Loudoun County Championship Meet at Claude Moore.  We will be taking a bus to the meet.  Be at Riverside by 8:15 am for the bus trip.

Key Items for Saturday

  • All swimmers will ride the bus to the meet.  If you will not be riding the bus back to RVHS after the meet, I need to be notified, in writing (email) from your parents by 4:00 pm on Thursday.
  • Warm-ups start at 9:15am. Racing begins at 10:45am.
  • Gates open to the public at 10:00am. Admission is $7.
  • Meet programs will be sold at the meet for $3.
  • I do not have a meet timeline. I estimate this to be a 4+ hour meet. Make sure you have food and drinks to get through the day and to keep you energized.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we’ll see you at the pool Monday.

If your parents have not already signed up to volunteer at meets, please encourage them to do so.  Our first meet is coming soon – December 4 – and there are still opportunities available for officials.  Here are the links to sign up to volunteer.

RVHS Swim -- Week of November 15

Rams,

Welcome to the 2021-22 swim season.   It is going to be a great year!  Coach Keeton and I are looking forward to getting to work this week.

Please remind your parents that the Riverside Winter Sports meeting is at school on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.  I’d like to encourage all parents to attend so that they don’t miss any information.

As we discussed at our meeting on Thursday, we had a great tryout week with some great swims, and we look to have an extremely deep team this year.  Over the next couple of weeks, we are able to get in some great workouts as we prepare for our first meet on December 4.  Be ready to practice HARD over the coming weeks.  It’s going to be a lot of fun and some very rewarding work.

If you have not already done so, please take care of the following as quickly as possible:

  • Turn in your report cards.
  • Purchase/Organize your equipment:  Suit, Goggles, Pull Buoys, Fins, and Snorkel.  Make sure you have a water bottle (full) for each practice!  https://www.swimoutlet.com/rvhsramsswim/

I have heard that there are already supply issues with the team suit.  If they are out of your size, I am sorry.  This year is crazy with supply issues.  Feel free to wear any suit that you desire for our meets, as long as it is legal.  While, we’d prefer team colors (blue, red, grey), I know it’s a challenge this year.

We need to be extremely organized and respectful at the pool. The Lansdowne HOA is carefully watching us and we need to make sure that we follow their rules.  As such, please arrive at 4:45 pm so that we can stretch, etc.  We will be ready to enter the pool at EXACTLY 5:00pm.  Do not be late.  We are on a tight timeline.

Also, we always finish practice on time.  Therefore, we request that all parents to please be at the pool to pick up your swimmers at 6:00 pm.  This will avoid having swimmers (and coaches) standing outside in the cold waiting for pick-ups.

We welcome you to show your team spirit and demonstrate support for the team by purchasing and wearing some official Rams Swim Team gear.  The online store will be open until Thursday, November 18. Your orders will be delivered to you directly, although it will take 7-9 weeks due to supply chain issues.  There’s some great stuff available. Check it out!

You can also purchase any swim equipment that you need through the Riverside Rams Swim Team Store on SwimOutlet - https://www.swimoutlet.com/rvhsramsswim/

You can purchase any swim items that you want/need on SwimOutlet and by entering through the Rams Swim Team Store, the team earns a residual payment.

Here is your schedule for the week of November 15:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday:

  • Team picture after school.  Please wear your team shirt and pants without holes for the picture (dark pants/jeans preferred).  Swimmers should gather in room 1402 no later than 4:15 pm.  We should be done by 4:40 pm.  Bring your picture forms to the team picture session if you wish to purchase pictures.
  • We’ll go straight to practice from the pictures.  I’ll probably walk, so anyone who wants can walk with me.
  • **If you want to leave your swim bag in my classroom for the day, feel free to drop it off.**
  • Practice at Lansdowne, 4:456:00 pm
  • Winter Sports Parent’s Meeting at RVHS Auditorium, 7:00 pm

Wednesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Thursday:

  • Team Meeting at RVHS room 1402, 4:155:15 pm
    • Among other things, we will be discussing our goals for the season and electing team captains for the season.
    • Team captains will be nominated by the coaches and elected by the team.  There will be 2 captains for the girl’s team, and 2 captains for the boy’s team.
  • Starting Blocks Practice at Ida Lee, 8:309:30 pm
  •

We are looking forward to an amazing season and cannot wait to get to work tomorrow.

Go Rams!
