Yesterday in Richmond, VA, the Riverside Rams Swim Teams completed the 2018-19 season with strong performances at the State Championship Meet. The Boys team finished 5th, 49.5 points behind the State Champions Blacksburg. This is a significant improvement over last year's 10th place finish, and was a great conclusion to the 2018-19 season for the Boys, who won the Dulles District and the Region 4C Championships this season. The Girls team finished 3rd, 72.5 points behind Monacan's first place performance, and also improved from last year's 5th place finish. The Girls also captured the Dulles District and Regional Championships this season -- repeating in both, and capturing their third straight Regional Championship.
The meet was the final high school meet for 3 of the team's seniors -- Brock Lippy, Jackson McCummings, and Claire Nguyen. All three delivered impressive performances in their final races as Rams.
- Lippy finished 13th in the 50 free, and was part of the relays that captured 5th place and new team records - 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle.
- McCummings finished 4th in the 100 breast and 12th in the 100 free, and was also a part of the 5th place and record setting 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle relays.
- Nguyen wrapped up an incredible high school career with 1st place finishes and All-American times in the 200 free (automatic qualification) -- with a meet record time -- and 500 free (consideration). In addition, she was part of the 2nd place 200 Freestyle relay, and the 1st place 400 Freestyle relay. Claire's victory in the 200 free was her 4th straight state championship in the 200 free, and the girls 400 free relay won for the 3rd straight season.
In all, there were 8 new Riverside Ram Swim Team records set yesterday, four of which were set by sophomore, Robert Quan, and three by senior, Jackson McCummings. The are:

The complete meet results are available on RiversideRams.net.
For 2018-19, both Rams teams finished with regular season records of 6-1, won the Dulles District Championship Meet, and won the Region 4C Championship Meet. Repeat champions in the Dulles District = 2 trophies and 2 more banners to hang in the gym.

Rams,
As Dickens wrote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” That’s what it felt like this week. The Boys vs Girls week events were amazing – fantastic and creative spirit, organized and chaotic races into and out of the pool, and then the swimming on Wednesday was incredible. The energy and excitement coming from it all could not have been better.
Then…LCPS came along yesterday and cancelled activities. Not only did we miss the opportunity for many of you to swim in your last races of the season, but we have been forced to put off the celebration of our seniors. We’ll hold our senior night ceremony at our end-of-season party on February 21. We are already planning some things to make it different and special...plus it puts off some of the emotions of saying goodbye and thank you to our amazing senior class.
Now…we get to work. This is what we’ve been preparing for throughout the season – Championship meets! The District Championship meet is Saturday. Then, we have two weeks to ramp up for the Regional Championship (February 8) and another week for States (February 15). Now is the time to focus on swimming and taking care of our bodies – eat well, sleep well, train well – so that we perform our best on meet days.
Information on Districts
We will be traveling to Claude Moore by bus as a team. The bus will be leaving RVHS at 11:30 am on Saturday. All swimmers who are swimming at Districts are expected to travel with the team on the bus to the meet. In addition, any swimmers who are not entered in the meet are welcome to ride the bus as well – In fact, we want you there!
Please note that if you travel with the team to the meet, I expect for you to travel back to RVHS with the team as well. If you do not intend to ride the bus back with the team, I need to be notified by Friday that you will not be returning on the bus. Please email me to let me know. Thank you!

Rams,
After a great week of practice, we had a fun meet Friday night. I had so much fun on Friday – between the excitement of State & Regional Cut Times and the spirit and singing during the final race – I was up until 1:00 am smiling and replaying the meet in my mind. It was fantastic.
This week promises to be a lot of fun too. It’s “Boys vs Girls Week” with our intra-squad meet on Wednesday and contests and points to be earned throughout the week. Weather permitting, here’s a summary of the additional scoring opportunities that are available to you:
Monday & Tuesday – 5 points for first full team in the water and swimming at practice.
Monday & Tuesday – 5 points for the first full team to LEAVE the Potomac Club and go home after practice.
Monday – PLANK CHALLENGE – 5 points for longest plank
Wednesday – SPIRIT CHALLENGE – 5 points for the best team spirit displayed, both at school and during the meet
Please note that if LCPS is closed, there is no practice UNLESS they re-open facilities in the afternoon/evening. There have been times in the past where LCPS has allowed us to practice when school has been closed for the day. If school is closed, I will let you know by early afternoon whether or not we have practice.
Saturday is our last regular season meet and it is senior night. We’ll be celebrating our seniors – Brock Lippy, Pawon Silpacharn, Jackson McCummings, William Joo, Taylor Body, and Claire Nguyen. We have a presentation during the 15-minute break following the 50 freestyle. It’s always a bittersweet day.

Rams,
The physically tough part of the season is over. Having two meets without any full weeks of practice was tough physically. Now that our “break” is behind us, we are ready for the exciting home stretch of the regular season and then into the championship season. We are ready – physically and mentally!
At our meeting last week, I presented to you the possibilities of success that are ahead of us. I stressed the importance of getting energized and focused for the rest of the regular season so that we can be best positioned for the post season. Take a look at what you are doing. Are you eating well, getting enough sleep, practicing efficiently, etc? If you are not getting the results that you want, what should you change? Make sure that you are having fun while working toward your goals.
Two weeks to go in the regular season…
On Wednesday, January 30, the team will be holding its annual Swim-a-Thon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The Swim-a-Thon will run from 7:15-9:15 pm at the Potomac Club. All swimmers are invited to participate, and I hope that everyone will. At our meeting on Thursday, pledge envelopes were distributed. If you did not get yours, or have misplaced it, I have more – come pick one up. In addition, LLS has set up a website for donations to our Swim-a-Thon effort. It will be “live” to collect donations beginning tomorrow.
https://events.lls.org/pages/nca/riversiderams
I look forward to having a successful fundraiser, as well as a fun event. Look for a sign-up coming soon for donations for food and drinks for the swimmers during the Swim-a-Thon. Thank you for your support.

Rams,
I hope that everyone has enjoyed the holiday season and is excited for 2019. We are rapidly approaching the end of the regular season and I am getting more and more visibility into the post-season possibilities and I am very excited about what we can accomplish. We had several swimmers drop significant time during last night’s meet. Since we were coming out of an “off” week, I am thoroughly impressed, and highly energized by your performances.
This week is another challenging week for swimming because of New Years. We have practice on Wednesday and Thursday (blocks) only. Again, I <strongly> suggest that swimmers make every effort to get some pool time in on their own this week. We are nearing the end of the regular season, and we still have a lot to accomplish. Do not let the time off from school and lack of RVHS practice get in the way of you achieving your goals. Try to get to a pool tomorrow to get in a workout on your own. We’re making great progress. Don’t let it slip.
Here is the schedule for the week:
Week of December 31:
Monday: No practice. Enjoy the time with your family. (Try to get to a pool and swim.)
Tuesday: No practice. Enjoy the time with your family.
Wednesday: BACK TO SCHOOL & Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Rams,
This time of the season is always tough. With winter break messing with our practice schedule, and the holiday distractions that can keep us away from the pool, it’s important that we do everything that we can, individually, to stay on schedule. We only have one full practice before Saturday’s meet against Loudoun County, and then only one full practice next week before our meet against Loudoun Valley.
That means that we only have 2 full weeks of practice left in the regular season. We have a lot of individual and team goals to accomplish. Do what you can, individually over the next couple of weeks, to drive toward these goals. This means trying to get to a pool tomorrow and next Monday, if possible, to get in a workout on your own. We’re making great progress. Don’t let it slip.
Here is the schedule for the next two weeks:
Week of December 24:
Monday: No practice. Enjoy the time with your family. (Try to get to a pool and swim.)
Tuesday: No practice. Enjoy the time with your family.
Wednesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm
Thursday: Starting blocks practice at Ida Lee, 9:30-10:30 pm

Rams,
We’ve reached the halfway point of the season – 4 meets down, 4 to go. We’re making great progress, but still have a lot of work to do. We need to take advantage of this two-week break between meets to rest up, eat well, and get ourselves focused for the challenging and exciting stretch ahead of us. Celebrate the successes that we’ve had so far. Remember our ultimate goals of post-season triumphs.
Parents, thank you so much for your help and support thus far this season. We still have many open volunteer spots for our last 4 meets of the season. Please take the time now to fill these spots. Without you, we cannot hold the meets. Thank you!

Wow…what a weekend. Two meets. 23 State Qualifying Swims. 14 more Qualifying for Regionals…and 4 new team records (and one tied team record). It was a great start to the 2018-19 season.

In addition, we have other swimmers who will participate in the relays. What our relay line-ups will be will be determined at the end of the regular season.

Jackson McCummings – 100 free and 100 breast
Robert Quan – 100 back, and he tied his own 200 free record
Boys 400 Free Relay – Christian Szilagyi, Otto Gerstl, Chris Kopac, and Robert Quan

I need to remind everyone about the VHSL attendance/participation policy. Students must be in school by 9:30 a.m. on the day of an event to be able to participate. Students may be late if, and only if, they have a medical appointment AND when arriving at school they have a note from the doctor. The note must state that the student is medically cleared to participate in the day’s event. Without this, students will not be allowed to participate in the event. There is no flexibility in this, so please be sure to adhere to the policy. In fact, I recommend that you do not schedule appointments, etc. on the days of meets, if possible. Come to school on time.

Rams,
It was a fantastic first week of practice. You came in ready to go and worked hard throughout. Coach Quinn and I are thrilled with how things went this week.
If your parents are not receiving email from me, please make sure that they get their email address to me. I want to make sure everyone is fully informed throughout the season.
If you have not provided me with your report card, please do so immediately. You can send me the electronic version from StudentVue. Take care of it NOW.
With our first meets coming on November 30 and December 1, it’s time to start getting parents registered to volunteer at meets. For each meet, we need as many as 17 volunteers. This includes timers, which require no special training, as well as meet officials (Starter/Referee, and Stroke & Turn officials). If you are interested in being a meet official, here is a link to the instructions to complete the VHSL process - //bigteams-public-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/library/files/riversideathletics.bigteams_com_145966/files/2018-19-Swim-Dive-Official-Registration-Instructions.pdf
Kearney Lewis is leading our volunteer efforts this year as our team Volunteer Coordinator. Thank you, Mrs. Lewis! Look for information within the next couple of days on how to sign up to volunteer.
In addition, before each home meet, our team holds pasta parties. Libby Kinstle is coordinating our pasta parties and sent out information yesterday about dates and hosting opportunities. If you are willing to open your home to the team, please let her know. There will be a sign-up distributed for families to register to bring the food, drinks, etc. Look for that information soon.
Here is your schedule for the week of November 19:
Monday: Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm
- We will be electing team captains before practice. Please try to arrive a little early.
Tuesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm
It’s a short week of school and practice. Let’s make it productive and efficient. Then, we can rest up, enjoy Thanksgiving with our families, and then come back ready to get our meets started.
Please remember that if you wish to purchase some team shirts, socks, jackets, etc, you have until Tuesday, November 20 to place your order. All items ordered will be delivered to me at school and I will distribute them to you.

Rams,
Welcome to the 2018-19 swim season. We look forward to defending our Dulles District Championships (Boys & Girls) and Region 4C Championship (Girls), and intend to make a strong run at the State Championships (both teams). It is going to be a great year. Coach Quinn and I are looking forward to getting to work this week.
Therefore, be ready to practice HARD over the coming weeks. We have only 3 weeks to get ready for our first meets – November 30 & December 1.
If you have not already done so, please take care of the following as quickly as possible:
- Submit your $150 athletic fee to Riverside Athletics
- Complete and turn your paperwork: Rules and Suit/Shirt/Cap/Jacket Orders.
- Purchase/Organize your equipment: Suit, Goggles, Pull Buoys, Fins, and Snorkel. Make sure you have a water bottle (full) for each practice!
As we discussed at our team meeting on Thursday, we need to be extremely organized and respectful at the pool. The Lansdowne HOA is carefully watching us and we need to make sure that we follow their rules. As such, please arrive at 8:00 pm so that we can stretch, etc. Then, we will head out to the pool and be ready to enter the pool at EXACTLY 8:15 pm. We did this extremely well with this last week. Let’s keep it up.
Also, we always finish practice on time. Therefore, we request that all parents to please be at the pool to pick up your swimmers at 9:15. This will avoid having swimmers (and coaches) standing outside in the cold waiting for pick-ups.
We welcome you to show your team spirit and demonstrate support for the team by purchasing and wearing some official Rams Swim Team gear. Check it out!

Rams,
The day has finally come! Tomorrow, we are in the pool to start the 2018-19 swim season. Coach Quinn and I hope that you are as excited about this season as we are.
With 82 (!) swimmers on the athletic department list, tryouts this week are going to be crowded and competitive. Therefore, it is important that we all work together to ensure that things run smoothly, that we support one another, and that everyone gives their best effort over the coming days.
At tomorrow’s meeting, we’ll do a final check on paperwork, etc. with the Athletic Department, review the schedule, and discuss how tryouts will work in significant detail. Each team (Boys & Girls) will have approximately 25 athletes on the team. Coaches will evaluate swimmers during the time trial try-outs and select the team accordingly. All athletes are expected to attend all sessions during try-outs to be fully considered for the team.
Here is your schedule for the week of November 5:
Monday: Meeting at RVHS, room 1402, 2:00-3:00 pm
Monday: Tryouts at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm 400 Meter Free
Tuesday: Tryouts at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm 100 Meter Free & 50 Meter Breast
Wednesday: Tryouts at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm 50 Meter Fly & 50 Meter Back
Thursday: Team Meeting at RVHS, 4:15-5:00 pm 2018-19 Team Announced

Rams,
It was amazing yesterday. There must have been 10-15 of you who walked past me and said, "Two weeks." You know it's coming. You are excited...and so am I.
The Riverside Rams Swim Season starts on Monday, November 5. Coach Quinn and I can't wait to see you. As a reminder, here a summary of how tryout week will work.
Remember that you must have all of your athletic paperwork in to the athletic department in order to participate. All forms, including the physical, are on www.RiversideRams.net.
Each team (Boys & Girls) will have approximately 25 athletes on the team. Coaches will evaluate swimmers during the time trial try-outs and select the team accordingly. All athletes are expected to attend all sessions during try-outs in order to be fully considered for the team. The time trial try-out schedule is as follows:
Monday, November 5 – 2:00-3:00pm @ Riverside High School, room 1402 – Info. Meeting
Monday, November 5 – 8:00-9:15pm @ Lansdowne on the Potomac – 400M freestyle
Tuesday, November 6 – 8:00-9:15 pm @ Lansdowne on the Potomac – 100M freestyle & 50M breast
Wednesday, November 7 – 8:00-9:15pm @ Lansdowne on the Potomac – 50M fly & 50M back
Thursday, November 8 – 4:15pm @ Riverside High School, room 1402 – Team Announced
Swimmers will be evaluated based on times achieved in each event. Coaches will analyze each event separately as well as cumulatively to determine each swimmer’s “rank”. This analysis will be used to determine the final roster for the Riverside Rams Swim Team.
Rest up. Eat well. Hit the pool.
Swim Team is coming!
If you have questions, or need more information, let me know.
