Rams Swimming - Girls win LCPS's First State Championship; Boys Finish in 8th

Yesterday in Richmond, VA, the Riverside Rams Swim Teams wrapped up an amazing season at the 3A Swim & Dive State Championship.  The Boy's team finished in 8th place, a dramatic improvement from 17th in 2015-16.  The Girl's won the State Championship trophy -- the first State Swim & Dive Championship in Loudoun County Public Schools' history.  It was an incredible season for the Girl's team, which completed the season undefeated, won the 3A East Regional Championship, and then capped it off with the State Championship, after finishing in 13th place just a year ago.

The Boy's team had a strong showing, scoring 103 points to finish just 10 points behind seventh place finisher Cave Spring High School.  The Boys 3A State Champion is the Hidden Valley High School team, which won quite convincingly.  Twelve Rams swimmers competed in the meet and they all swam well, with 10 of the boys qualifying for, and swimming in, the meet's finals events.

The Girl's team dominated the competition, outscoring the second place team, York High School, by 78 points -- 270-192.  Fourteen girls competed in the meet for the Rams, with 11 of them participating the meet's finals events.  Of the 11 races in the meet, the Riverside Rams Girl's Swimmers captured first place in 5.  They are:

Girls 200 Medley Relay - Ashley Bae, Hannah Ye, Claire Nguyen, Allison Kopac - 1:48.52

Girls 200 Freestyle - Claire Nguyen - 1:48.46 -- A 3A State Meet Record and an Automatic All-America Qualifying Time

Girls 100 Freestyle - Allison Kopac - 51.15 - A 3A State Meet Record

Girls 500 Freestyle - Allison Kopac - 4:55.71

Girls 400 Freestyle Relay - Claire Nguyen, Ashley Bae, Hannah Ye, Allison Kopac - 3:34.98

The complete results for the meet are available on RiversideRams.net.

Swim Team: Week of 2/6 - REGIONALS TIME!

Rams,

Here. We. Go.  It’s been a long time since our last meet.  We are well prepared.  We are rested.  We are focused.  It is time to introduce the Riverside Rams Swim Team to the 3A East Region.  At the Regional Championship Meet on Friday, people going to notice us…in a BIG way.

In order to place highly (WIN!) at the State Championships, we must place well at Regionals on Friday.  Friday’s meet is a stepping stone toward our ultimate goals.  Swimmers who place in the top 10 at Regionals in individual events automatically qualify for the State Championship Meet.  In addition, relay teams that qualify in the top 8 at Regionals automatically qualify for States.  We need as many State qualifiers as possible on Friday to set ourselves up for the ultimate success.

We are ready for this.  It is time to make history.

Here is your schedule for the week of February 6:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Wednesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Thursday: Team Meeting at RVHS, 4:00-4:45 pm

Friday:  Regional Championship Meet at the SwimRVA facility - 5050 Ridgedale Pkwy, Richmond, VA 23234; (804) 271-8271 – Meet starts at 11:30 am.  Admission is $7.00

Bus leaves Riverside High School by 7:00 am.  Arrive at RVHS by 6:45 am so that we can leave on time.

Bus returns to RVHS immediately following the meet (estimated return at 6:30 pm).  Email me by Thursday if you will not be riding the bus back with the team.

Important dates to make sure you have on your calendar:

Saturday, February 18 – State Championship Meet in Richmond (same facility).  Team leaves for Richmond on Friday, February 17.

Thursday, February 23 – 6:00 pm – End-of-Season Celebration at RVHS.  Look for an invitation with cost, etc. soon.

Enjoy the Super Bowl.  See you tomorrow.

Swim Team: Ewe Better Believe It -- The Lady Rams are Undefeated!

With a 223-55 victory over the Park View Patriots at Claude Moore last night, the Riverside Rams Girls Swim Team wrapped up the regular season 9-0 and became the first Riverside varsity sports team to finish a regular season undefeated.  The Rams Boys Swim Team won 187.5-97.5, making their regular season mark 8-1.  It was a remarkable and memorable season for the Rams Swim Teams.

Swim Team: Riverside Rams Top Stone Bridge Bulldogs in Exciting Meet

Last night at Ida Lee, the Riverside Rams Boys and Girls swim teams beat the Stone Bridge Bulldogs Boys and Girls swim teams.  The final scores were 156-130 (Boys) and 163-123 (Girls).  This was an exciting and energetic meet from the first event with the Riverside Girls Medley Relay out-touching the Stone Bridge team at the wall.  That race set the tone for the entire meet and the large crowd that was there to celebrate each team's senior nights was whipped into a frenzy from the start.

With the victories, the Rams boys team improved it's record to 7-1 and the girls remained undefeated at 8-0 for the 2016-17 season.  As the Rams wrap up their regular season today against Park View, the girls team will be looking to become the first undefeated varsity team in Riverside's two-year history.

The complete results of the meet have been uploaded to RiversideRams.net.

Swim Team: Week of January 16 - Last Week of the Regular Season

Rams,

During Friday’s meet, we were told, once again, by someone from an opposing team, how nice, friendly, spirited, and respectable our team is.  We continue to “win with class and graciousness”.  You make me proud and honored to be your coach. Thank you.

I hope that you enjoyed your “rain out” yesterday.  It does not look like the weather should cause us any problems as we head into our final two meets of the season.  Remember that Friday is “Senior Night” and we’ll be celebrating our seniors during the meet’s break.  On Saturday, we wrap up the regular season against Park View.

Here is an update on our 2016-17 team goals:

1)      Send more swimmers to the state championship meet this season than we did in 2015-16.  Therefore, the goal is at least 17 swimmers for 2016-17.

Update:  I project that we’ll send at least 23 swimmers to States.  However, you can do better than this.  I know it.

2)      Complete the regular season undefeated. (My goals are 6 wins for the boys and 7 for the girls).

Update:  The girls continue to win and with two more victories and be the first Riverside team to go undefeated throughout the regular season.  With two wins for both the boys and girls on Friday, we’ve hit my goals of 6 (boys) and 7 (girls).  Let’s go for 8 & 9!

Update:  We’re sitting at 310 seconds right now.  The conversion of meters to yards made it tough to truly measure this last week.  We’ve got 2 meets to drop 90 seconds.  Let’s get it done!

I have created a folder for us to share pictures.  If you have any swim team pictures from the season that you’d like to share, please upload them to this folder.  Also, feel free to copy any pictures that are posted here.  I will be using these to create a slide show for the end-of-season party on February 23.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B8ciW4SKMU_tdlh2ODdsUW55N3c?usp=sharing

Here is your schedule for the week of January 16:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm  THERE IS NO SCHOOL, BUT THERE IS PRACTICE

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Wednesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Thursday: Team Meeting at RVHS, 4:00-4:45 pm

Pasta Party hosted by the Body family – 7:00 pm

43619 Carradoc Farm Terrace in Lansdowne

Friday:  Swim meet against Stone Bridge at Ida Lee.  Warm-ups start at 7:00 pm. Please arrive at the pool by 6:45 pm.

Saturday:  Swim meet against Park View at Claude Moore.  Warm-ups start at 5:30 pm.  Please arrive at the pool by 5:15 pm.

Sunday:  I will announce the swimmers who will be swimming at Regionals.

I am in the process of finalizing the line-up and the split tracking assignments for the meets.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I’ll see you on Monday.

Swim Team: Rams Boys and Girls Pick up 2 More Wins Each

Last night in Winchester, Riverside competed in a "triangular meet" against John Handley and Louisa County High Schools.  The Riverside Rams boys and girls teams both had dominating performances, with the boys topping Handley 132-33 and Louisa 130-31, and the girls beating Handley 124-45 and Louisa 128.5-32.5.  This improves the boys record to 6-1, and the girls to 7-0.

Once again, the Rams were spirited, energetic, and fast in the water.  In addition, the Rams continue to demonstrate the sportsmanship and respect for teammates and competitors that is noticed and praised by the opposing teams at almost every meet.

As the meet was held in a 25 meter pool, the official times need to be converted to yards before we have the official results to post.  Once that process is completed, I will announce that the results are posted.

The Rams have 2 more regular season meets remaining -- Friday, January 20, versus Stone Bridge at 7:00 p.m. at Ida Lee (Senior Night), and Saturday, January 21, versus Park View at 5:30 pm at Claude Moore.

The boys team has their work cut out for them on Friday.  The Rock Ridge meet was close.  This one is even closer, with it coming down to 5th, 6th, and 7th place finishes throughout the meet for those extra points.  Every swim counts.  Every finish has to be strong.  We need everyone at their best on Friday night, so make sure you are resting up, eating well, and getting yourself focused and prepared for a great meet on Friday night.

Have fun tonight at the pasta party at the Lind's house (co-hosted by the McCummings family).

Remember that the meet theme is Holidays/Christmas, so wear your favorite (or ugliest) holiday apparel to the meet.  Let's get into to the holiday spirit and have a lot of fun.

Swim Team: Week of December 12

Rams,

It was another fantastic showing by the Riverside Rams’ swim team this week.  We won with class and graciousness once again.  This week, it gets “real” as we will be facing a tough competitor on Saturday, the Rock Ridge Phoenix.  The meet is sure to be a challenge for both the boy’s and girl’s teams, so we want to make sure we have an excellent, focused week of practice.

To help us work on some of the things that we saw at yesterday’s meet – fitness, strong turns, and powerful finishes, in particular – we are cutting the stroke & turn lane for this week.  All six lanes will be completing full work-outs this week.  The stroke & turn lane will return in January.

On December 21, we have our winter sports pep rally at school at the end of the day.  The team captains have asked that swimmers complete the following survey about our attire, entrance music, and cheer for the pep rally.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12kj8D1bcIDRED-WDHcO6o51WDIeTjF6G4Yi4dQ5HbeA/edit?ts=584b7ed4

Here is an update on our 2016-17 team goals:

  1. Send more swimmers to the state championship meet this season than we did in 2015-16.  Therefore, the goal is at least 17 swimmers for 2016-17.

Update:  We now have 10 swimmers who have qualified for states.  With 7 regular season meets still to go, we are looking good.  Keep up the great work and performances.

  1. Complete the regular season undefeated.

Update:  Both teams are undefeated after week 2. Rock Ridge is going to be a significant challenge for us.  A great week of practice and a lot of energy and support for one another during Saturday’s meet gives us a great shot at keeping this goal alive.

  1. Drop 200 seconds of time throughout the season.

Update:  In yesterday’s meet, we dropped over 70 seconds, bringing our cumulative total to 137.7 seconds.  Our top contributor was Isabelle Kahng who shaved over 12 seconds off of her 200 IM time!  Keep it going!

Each swimmer has submitted their individual goals as well.  As we discussed at our meeting, one of the best way to help to support our teammates is to be aware of each other’s goals and to motivate each other to achieve these goals.  To help with this, individual goals have been posted to RiversideRams.net.  Take a look at them.  Keep track of them.  Surpass them!

Swim Team: Week of 12/5/16

Rams,

Congratulations on a fantastic first meet of the season.  Not only did both the boy’s and girl’s teams have convincing victories, but also our team was highly praised by officials, Loudoun Valley coaches, and by a spectator (a RVHS teacher) for our excellent sportsmanship throughout the meet.  We were called “a class act” by the officials, and the spectator wrote to me stating, “Any team can win; few can win with class and graciousness.”

Nothing makes me more proud of you all than to get comments like this.  Keep up the great results and great representation of yourself, your school, your families, and your coaches.

On Saturday, we travel to Manassas to swim against Brentsville, the only 3A school against which we will compete during the regular season.  We are down a few swimmers for this meet, so everyone who is there needs to bring their “A” game.  This is a great measuring stick for our post-season aspirations.

Remember that the team store is open through Tuesday ONLY.  If you want to order any additional spirit wear (hats, etc.), please take care of that now.  Here is the link to the team store - https://riversideswimming.itemorder.com/sale

On Thursday, you established the team goals for the 2016-17 swim season. Here they are:

  1. Send more swimmers to the state championship meet this season than we did in 2015-16.  Therefore, the goal is at least 17 swimmers for 2016-17.

Update:  On Friday, we had 5 swimmers qualify for states:  Allison Kopac, Hannah Ye, Mikaela Haast, Ashley Bae, Rebecca Oh. We are well on our way.

  1. Complete the regular season undefeated.

Update:  Both teams are undefeated after week 1.  So far, so good.

  1. Drop 200 seconds of time throughout the season.

Update:  I compared our times from Friday to our best times of 2016-17.  We dropped 63.82 seconds!  The biggest contributor is Jack Lind who dropped over 8 seconds in the 200 free.  Keep it up!

Here is your schedule for the week of December 5:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Swim Team: Rams Win & Have 7 State Qualifying Swim

Last night at Ida Lee, the Riverside Rams and Loudoun Valley Vikings opened the high school swim season.  The Rams Boys won 197-88, and the Rams Girls won 191-91.  It was a great meet, with several Rams swimmers achieving state cut times.

Ram state qualifiers are as follows:

Girls 200 Medley Relay team -- Ashley Bae, Hannah Ye, Mikaela Haast, and Allison Kopac

Girls 200 Freestyle Relay team - Hannah Ye, Rebecca Oh, Mikaela Haast, and Allison Kopac

Girls 50 Freestyle - Allison Kopac and Hannah Ye

Girls 100 Freestyle - Allison Kopac

Girls 200 IM - Hannah Ye

Girls 100 Breast - Hannah Ye

In all, 6 Rams swimmers secured their spots at the State Championship meet in February -- in the first meet of the season!  It is also notable that this is the 4th consecutive year in which Rebecca Oh (Sr) has qualified for the state championship swim meet - way to go Rebecca!

We are awaiting the official results file and once we have that, it will be posted/distributed.

Riverside's next meet is Saturday, December 10 at Brentsville.

Swim Team: Week of November 21

Rams,

What a great first week of practices!  We had great energy throughout the week, and I am impressed with everyone’s positive attitude and desire to improve.  Keep up the great work.

Thank you for getting in your paperwork, athletic fees, etc.  I have placed the orders for the team suits, caps, and jackets.  The suits and caps will be delivered soon – early next week.  The jackets take a bit longer to produce. They have given me a delivery date of late December, but hopefully they’ll come sooner.  I’m sorry about the delay, but at least we’ll have them for the second half of the season…and beyond.

We will open the team store soon to give everyone the opportunity to buy more spirit wear.  We will have sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweat pants, etc. available for purchase.

We need a host for the December 1 pasta party.  These are great team bonding events, and are a lot of fun for the athletes.  Please consider being the host next week for our first pasta party of the season.  Email Ellie Streeter - streeter.cleswim.elena@gmail.com – if you are willing to be the host.

Keep an eye out for email from Matt Merz about volunteer sign-ups.  Our first meet is December 2, so we’ll be looking for a referee, 2 stroke and turn officials, and 12 timers.  Thank you in advance for your help.

This is a short week because of Thanksgiving. Here is your schedule for the week of November 21:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Wednesday:  No practice.

Thursday:  Happy Thanksgiving!  No practice.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we’ll see you at the pool tomorrow.

Swim Team: Week of November 14, 2016

Rams,

Welcome to the 2016-17 swim season.  It is going to be a great year.  Coach Quinn, Coach Koons, and I are looking forward to getting to work this week as we have some significant goals for the season that we EXPECT to achieve.

If you have not already done so, please take care of the following as quickly as possible:

Submit your $150 athletic fee to Riverside Athletics
Complete and turn your paperwork:  Rules, Suit/Shirt/Cap/Jacket Orders, and Swimmer information
Purchase/Organize your equipment:  Suit, Goggles, Pull Buoys, and Snorkel (optional)

As we discussed at our team meeting on Thursday, we want everyone to arrive early for practice.  It appears that, if the pool is available, Lansdowne will allow us to begin practice earlier than scheduled.  Therefore, please arrive 10-15 minutes EARLIER that the times listed below, if possible.

Also, we always finish practice on time.  Therefore, we request that all parents to please be at the pool to pick up your swimmers at 9:15.  This will avoid having swimmers (and coaches) standing outside in the cold waiting for pick-ups.

Here is your schedule for the week of November 14:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Wednesday:

Team picture after school.  Swimmers will be issued their team shirts after school.  Please wear JEANS for the picture.  Swimmers should gather in room 1206 no later than 4:30 pm.  We should be done by 5:30 pm.  Bring your picture forms to the team picture session.
Winter Sports Parent’s Meeting at RVHS Auditorium, 7:00 pm
Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Thursday:

Team Meeting at RVHS room 1206, 4:00-5:00 pm

We will be discussing our individual goals for the season and electing team captains.
Team captains will be nominated by the coaches and elected by the team.  There will be 2 captains for the girls team, and 2 captains for the boys team.

Starting Blocks Practice at Ida Lee, 9:30-10:30 pm

We are looking forward to an amazing 2016-17 season, and cannot wait to get to work tomorrow.

Swim Team: Dryland Conditioning Starts Tuesday / Parents Meeting Thursday

Rams,

Coach Quinn and I are very excited to see as many of you as possible on Tuesday at 4:00 pm for the start of our dryland conditioning program.  We'll meet in my classroom by 4:00 pm for a quick check-in and then, weather permitting, head outside for our work out.  Please remember that you must have your athletic forms turned in to the RVHS athletic department before you may participate in team activities.  Without your forms, you can only watch everyone else having fun.

You should be nice and loosened up because, as the calendar recommends, you start your swimming program this week as well.  Get in your 1800 meter (minimum) work outs this week.

Our parents meeting is Thursday at 6:00 pm in the library at RVHS.  I look forward to sharing information about the team with parents then and answering all of your questions that you may have about the team and the season.

RVHS Rams Swimmers,

On Tuesday, October 4, we are starting our dryland conditioning for the upcoming swim season.  These sessions are optional, but are highly recommended for all athletes interested in swimming at Riverside this year.  In order to participate, you must complete and turn in all health and permission forms to the athletic department.  See RiversideRams.net for the forms.

Conditioning will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout October, from 4-5pm.  We will meet in my classroom (1206) at 4pm.  Please come prepared with the following:  running shoes, water, a towel and/or yoga matt, and clothes that are appropriate for exercising both inside and outside -- we may utilize both.

On Thursday, October 6, we will hold our Parents Interest meeting at 6pm in the school library.  This is to give parents the opportunity to learn more about the team, how tryouts and practices will work, and what our expectations are for the season.  In addition, we will answer your questions and talk about all of the great volunteer opportunities for swim team parents.

Swim Team: Week of February 8

Rams,

This is it -- Regional Championship week!  We've worked hard all season to prepare ourselves for this meet.  As we taper you at practice and get you ready, you can take some other great steps to prepare yourself for Friday:

1)  Eat well ALL week!  Stay away from the junk food -- chips, cookies, ice cream, double caramel machiato mocha frapes (or whatever it is that you order at Starbucks).  Eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grain carbohydrates whenever possible.  You'll be amazed how it will affect your body and mind, and therefore your execution in the pool.

2)  Sleep!  Don't stay up late every night for no reason (ie video games, Netflix, etc.).  Do your homework, swim, eat, sleep, and repeat.  The more rest you get this week, the better your body will feel on Friday.

3)  Get in the pool!  There is a snow storm in the forecast for Monday/Tuesday.  If it causes practice to be canceled on either night, please do whatever you can to make it to a pool.  You've got to get is some light swimming and strong turn work, at a minimum, this week.

4)  Enjoy it!  This is going to be fun.  Enjoy the moment.  Enjoy the challenge.  Enjoy your successes and celebrate them.

Here is your schedule for the week:

Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday - Practice from 8:15 - 9:30 at the Potomac Club.  Yes, that says 8:15!  Get there on time.

Thursday - The bus leaves Riverside at 2:30 pm.  You will leave school right after 3rd block.

Friday - Regional Championship in Richmond.  Riverside Rocks 3A East and makes history!

Remember, if you are not going to ride the bus back to Riverside with the team after Friday's meet, I need to know before we leave on Thursday.  This is extremely important.

I have posted the line-up, the rooming list, and the expectations and itinerary documents to RiversideRams.net.

Swim Team: Regional Championship Shirts -- RESPONSE REQUIRED

Rams,

I apologize for the flood of email, but we're trying to get a lot done in a short period of time and taking advantage of the Blizzaster.

We are putting together an order of swim team shirts commemorating our first trip to the Regional Championship Swim Meet.  In order to get the shirts in time for the meet, we need to place the order by Sunday.  Therefore, I need a response from everyone by noon on Sunday, January 31.

If you want to purchase a shirt, please email me the quantity and size(s) that you would like.

If you do not want a shirt, please email me to tell me that you are not interested.

In your email, please include the name of the swimmer(s) for whom you are responding.

I want to hear from everyone so that I can make sure that everyone has had the opportunity to purchase a shirt.  Again, we are on a tight deadline, so please respond as soon as possible.

The shirts are $20 each.  I've posted a sample of the shirt on RiversideRams.net.  Please note that the back of the shirt will include the name of everyone on the team because we are all heading to Richmond on February 11/12.

Swim Team: Spirit Bags

Hey Parents,

I hope you all have been enjoying this week with your wonderful kiddos at home all hours of the day ;)

As you know Regionals is coming up in about two weeks and it is the first of our championship meets. Coach Getis and I thought it would be fun to do something a little extra special for the swimmers that weekend.

What we would like to do is a spirit bag for each of the swimmers. If you would like to be involved we are asking that parents contribute a fun small item to each bag. If you would like to contribute you would need to bring 40 of the same item, please keep them under $5. I will be contributing a Gatorade and Powerbar to each bag some other ideas could include:
  • Homemade cookies
  • Granola Bars
  • Fruit Snacks
  • Travel Size Shaving Cream
  • Chocolate Milk
  • Gum
  • Items to enhance cheering at the meet- not sure what that is but feel free to run with it
No limits on creativity here so if you think the kids will enjoy it feel free to include it.

This is completely voluntary, so please don't feel pressured to contribute if you don't have the time. If you would like to donate please send me an e-mail at Ashley@rev3tri.com with the item you plan to bring, mostly so the kids don't get 40 travel shaving creams in a bag and then please drop off your goodies by TUESDAY Feb 9th at practice.

Thanks parents, please let me know if you have any questions. Super excited to get back to the pool next week!

Have a good weekend,

Swim Team: Meet Canceled

Rams,

Unfortunately, with LCPS closing schools on Friday, our meet with Brentsville has been canceled.  This means that our regular season is now over and our full focus is on the Regional Championship meet. Congratulations on a fantastic regular season.  You should enjoy the success....until tomorrow &#X1f60a

As soon as you can get to a pool, start swimming again.  The Potomac Club is open, so please, please, please try to get there and swim.  I have many, many guest passes that I can share with anyone who needs to use them.  Get in some pool time before we gear back up next week with regular practices again.

Remember, we have a mandatory meeting on Monday at 4pm to discuss the Regional Championship meet.

With schools being closed on Thursday, we are forced to cancel the pasta party.  We cannot have any official school events when schools are closed.  I am sorry.

If you choose to do something on your own, that is up to you.  However, it cannot be anything official.

Again, congratulations on a great regular season.  Now, let's make some history for Riverside in the post season.

Swim Team: Regional Meet Information/Mandatory Meeting

Rams,

Our Regional Championship Meet is scheduled for Friday, February 12, 2016 at the Collegiate Aquatic Center, 5050 Ridgedale Parkway, Richmond, VA 23234.  The meet starts early (warm-ups by 8:00 am), which is why we are traveling the night prior.

For the meet, each team is permitted 4 entries per individual event, and one relay team per relay event.  Given the size of our team, and the limitations on the number of events in which a swimmer may participate (4 total with no more than 2 individual events), nearly ALL Rams swimmers will be entered.

Because NEARLY all swimmers will compete, we have received permission for ALL Rams swimmers to travel with the team to Richmond for the meet.  If you are not entered in the meet and you do not want to come, you are free to opt out.  If you are entered in the meet, you are expected to swim.  Please note that going to the meet does mean that you will miss school on Friday, February 12.

We will have a Mandatory Team Meeting on Monday, February 1, at 4:00 pm in my classroom.  At the meeting, we will present the line-up for the meet, review expectations for practices, etc. leading up to the meet, review expectations, etc. for our travel and hotel stay, and discuss any other items needed in regard to the team.  All swimmers must attend the meeting.  I am giving you enough notice so that you can arrange to be there.  This is very important.

All swimmers traveling to Richmond with the team must complete an LCPS Field Trip Permission form.  I have uploaded the form to RiversideRams.net - //bigteams-public-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/library/files/riversideathletics.bigteams_com_145966/files/Regionals%20Permission%20Form.pdf

Please complete the form and return it to me as soon as possible -- Monday's meeting is a GREAT time to turn it in.

The team has hotel reservations at the Holiday Inn Bells Road - 4303 Commerce Road, Richmond, VA 23234, (804) 592-2900.  I am not sure if there are any rooms available there for parents, but I strongly encourage you to check soon and make reservations if you plan to stay overnight.

If you have any questions, please email me.

Rams,

The line-ups for this weekend's meets have been posted.

Friday vs Park View - //bigteams-public-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/library/files/riversideathletics.bigteams_com_145966/files/7%20-%20PV01222016.pdf

On Friday, Park View will be holding their Senior Night during the break.  I expect our team to be courteous and attentive to their program.  We should show them the same respect that we would want them to demonstrate to us.  Because of the program, there will be no warm-up time during the break -- no swimmers in the pool during the program.

I understand that there is a significant snow storm predicted for Friday and Saturday.  If weather causes us to cancel the meet(s), they will NOT be rescheduled.  There is no pool time available to reschedule swim meets.

See you at practice tonight.

Swim Team: Update on Regional & State Championship Meets

Rams,

I just received updated information on the Regional Championship Meet.  I have a few changes to prior announcements to present to you:

1)  We can enter up to 4 swimmers in each individual event at the Regional Championship Meet.  This means that nearly all swimmers (not necessarily all) will be in the line-up and going to Richmond.

2)  Swimmers qualify for the State Championship Meet (Feb. 19) by finishing in the top 10 in an individual event.

3)  Relays qualify for the State Championship Meet by finishing in the top 8 at the Regional Meet.

4)  Medals are awarded at the meet for the top 6 finishers in individual events and the top 3 relay finishers.

5)  We will be required to provide a significant number of timers for the meet.  We will be notified on February 9 what the exact number is, but please be prepared to volunteer.

6)  There is a $7.00 spectator admission fee for the meet.  Volunteers don't pay!

7)  Meet sheets, concessions, t-shirts, etc. will be sold at the meet.  No meet sheet will be distributed to the team prior to the meet.

8)  The pool is:  Collegiate School Aquatic Center, 5050 Ridgedale Parkway, Richmond, Va. 23234, Phone (804) 447-2487

The big changes are that the number of swimmers participating has significantly increased and the path to states just expanded dramatically.

Swim Team: Regional Meet Information

Rams,

As we start to reach the end of the regular season, I thought I'd share the information that we have received on our Regional Championship Meet.  The meet is on Friday, February 12, in Richmond VA at the SwimRVA facility.

We may enter 3 swimmers per individual event and one relay team per relay event for the meet.  This means that not all swimmers will be entered in the meet.  Coach Quinn and I are working on the line-up already and will continue to modify/adjust as we wrap up the regular season.  At the conclusion of the regular season, we will post the line-up.  All decisions on the line-up will be based on what is best for the team, and decisions will be made using times achieved during the regular season.  We want to put together the best possible line-up for the meet.  Our decisions are final and, if entered, we are counting on swimmers to be at the meet.

To help you prepare, I have the following information to share:

1)  The meet is a "timed finals" meet.  This means that while there will be multiple heats, swimmers will have one chance to swim their best and the final results are based on times, not places within the heat in which you swim.

2)  The meet starts EARLY on Friday, January 12.  Warm-ups will begin as early as 7:00 am. That is why we'll travel the night prior.

3)  The team will travel to Richmond together on Thursday night.  Swimmers will travel together on a bus to Richmond.  We will leave on Thursday, January 11, at 2:30 pm.

4)  The team will be staying in a hotel together on Thursday night.  We'll have them with 4 swimmers per room. We have reservations at the Holiday Inn, Richmond South.

5)  The team will return home after the meet on Friday, weather permitting.  The meet is scheduled to end at 12:00 pm on Friday.  You may choose to drive your swimmer home yourself as long as I am notified in advance.

Swimmers can qualify for the State Championship meet based on their finishing place at the Regional Championship meet.  The top 4 individual swimmers and top 3 relay teams in each event qualify for the State Championship meet, which is on February 19 and also in Richmond.

As more details are available, I'll share them.

Swim Team: Week of January 11

Rams,

Coach Quinn and I are extremely proud of you all -- your effort, your spirit, and your results were fantastic on Friday.  Unfortunately, we didn't win the meet but we definitely showed that we are a great team and that we are progressing more and more each week.  Way to go!

With only 3 weeks left in the regular season (4 meets), we are in "crunch time" to get our best times in the water before the post season starts.  Our approach for the next few weeks is to build on our speed -- our starts, our turns, and our finishes -- and finish the season strong.  This week is our LAST week in the regular season to have the opportunity to practice starts off of the blocks at Ida Lee.  I hope that everyone will take advantage of this optional practice this week.

Your schedule:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday -- Practice from 8:15-9:30 pm at the Potomac Club (notice that practice STARTS at 8:15.  BE ON TIME.)

Thursday -- Optional (but I hope everyone comes) Practice from 9:30-10:30 pm at Ida Lee

Friday -- Pasta Party at the Mahajan's House (19933 Augusta Village Place Ashburn, VA 20147) from 6:00-8:00 pm

Saturday -- Meet vs Dominion at 11:30 am at Claude Moore.  All swimmers are to meet the bus at Riverside by 10:30 am.

**Please note that if a swimmer is not going to ride the bus back to Riverside with the team, I need to be notified, IN WRITING and IN ADVANCE.  This means that I need an email, a text, or a note BEFORE the meet.***

I will be posting the line-up for Saturday's meet before 5:00 pm today.

Swim Team: Week of January 4

Rams,

I hope that everyone had a great break from school and excited to get back to classes tomorrow.  Yay!

We are halfway through the season.  There are only 4 weeks remaining in the regular season (5 meets) as our last dual meet is on January 29.  Then, we move into the post-season with our Regional Championship meet on February 12, and the State Championship meet on February 19.  Both of these meets are in Richmond, VA.  At our team meeting on Thursday, I'll review how the post season works -- how swimmers qualify, how we'll be setting the line-ups, etc.

Our focus at practice this week is speed!  We spent the last two weeks working on some distance swims.  Now, it's time to really work on power (kicking) and speed in the water.  Your schedule for the week:

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday:  Practice from 8:15-9:30 pm at the Potomac Club

Swim Team: Boys Remain Undefeated; Girls Fall to 2-2

The Riverside Rams kicked off 2016 with a swim meet against the Rock Ridge Phoenix at Claude Moore.  The Ram's boys remained undefeated and became the first varsity team at Riverside to start a season 4-0 with their 168-118 victory.  The Ram's girls lost a tough one 118-164 and are now 2-2.  It was an excellent meet for both teams.

The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Rebecca Oh (Jr.), Talyor Body (Fr.), Yasmine Boswell (Jr.), and Claire Nguyen (Jr.) qualified for the state championship meet with a fantastic swim.  Their time of 1:46.26 is a 3 second improvement over their prior best and surpassed the state qualifying standard.

Notable improvements are:

Claire Nguyen - Dropped 2 seconds in 200 freestyle

Taylor Barmak - Improved by 3 seconds in 200 IM

Jack Lind - Cut 2 seconds from his 500 freestyle time

Swim Team: Week of December 21

Rams,

Congratulations on a great weekend of swimming.  We've seen some great improvement in meets thanks to some strong practices.  We have two weeks before our next week and we'll take advantage of the time with some work on our conditioning and our finishes so that we can power our way to the wall in each race.

Our next meet is on January 2 against Rock Ridge.  I will be working on the line-up today and tomorrow.  Some of you mentioned to me that you MAY not be at the meet.  I need to know your plans, in writing, so that I can create the line-up appropriately.  Hopefully, we'll have a full squad for the meet as they have a strong team.

While the practices over break are listed as "optional", I do expect to see you at practice.  We don't want to become complacent.  In my experience, the meet coming in after break is the toughest meet for swimmers because they "slack off" during break and struggle in the pool upon their return.  Let's avoid this!

We have practice on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 8:15-9:30pm at the Potomac Club in Lansdowne.  Make sure you have your fins and water bottles this week!

I'll be posting the Tuscarora meet results shortly.

Lucia Ogango takes Caitlin's spot in the B relay

400 free relay:

The C relay is scratched.

Ellie Streeter moves from the B relay to the A relay in Claire's spot

Swim Team: Rams Swimming is 2-0!

Last night, the Riverside Rams boys and girls swim teams topped the Loudoun Valley Vikings -- 151-132 and 181-96, respectively.  It was a great meet with both teams showing a lot of spirit, support, and sportsmanship.  With the victories, the Rams' teams advanced to 2-0 in their inaugural seasons.

For the Rams girls team, three swimmers won all of their events:

Alex Lumley captured first place in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, and guided the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays to victory.

Claire Nguyen came in first in both the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle and qualified for the state championship meet in both of these events.  In addition, her relay teams -- the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle, took first place.

Rebecca Oh won both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events and was part of first-place finishing 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

In addition, several swimmers dramatically improved their times -- by 2 seconds or more.  Congratulations to the following swimmers who showed that their hard work does pay off.

Alex Lumley dropped 9 seconds in 200 freestyle.

Faith Fields lowered her 100 butterfly time by 8 seconds.

Ellie Streeter improved by 53 seconds (!) in the 500 freestyle.

Maria-Emilia Proano swam the 500 freestyle 43 seconds (!) faster than she has before.

Jack Darnell's 100 backstroke time was 3 seconds faster.

Tyler Pla improved by 2 seconds in 100 breaststroke.

William Joo dropped 4.5 seconds in 100 breaststoke.

Congratulations to the Rams on a fantastic meet.  Tonight, we take on the Tuscarora Huskies at 6:00 pm at Ida Lee.

Swim Team: Week of December 14

Rams,

This is an exciting week for RVHS Rams Swimming -- we have 2 meets as we roll into winter break.  Friday, we swim against Loudoun Valley.  Saturday, we get to see some old friends as we match up against Tuscarora.  Both meets are at Ida Lee.  The line-ups for both meets are posted on RiversideRams.net.

Last week, we had a focus on conditioning with some good distance work outs.  This week, we'll get in some distance, but our primary focus is going to be power, speed, and explosiveness.  See the article that I posted today on practicing better - http://www.riversiderams.net/main/teamfiles/id/3533223/seasonid/3760185.

Schedule for the week:  Please remember that we want everyone to arrive by 8:15 every night for practice from now on. This will give us time to stretch out before we hit the water.

Monday - Practice at Lansdowne from 8:15-9:30pm

Tuesday - Practice at Lansdowne from 8:15-9:30pm

Wednesday - Practice at Lansdowne from 8:15-9:30pm

Thursday - Team Meeting from 4:00-4:30 in room 1206

Thursday - Pasta Party at the Darnell's house from 6:00-8:00pm (see link below to sign up and for the address)

Friday - Pep Rally during the school day at RVHS.  Wear your team shirt!

Friday - Meet vs Loudoun Valley at Ida Lee - 9:00 pm.  Please arrive at 8:45 pm (no earlier, no later).  Ida Lee does not want us in the facility until 15 minutes prior to our warm-up times.  They will ask us to wait in our cars if we show up early.

Saturday - Meet vs Tuscarora at Ida Lee - 6:00 pm.  Please arrive at 5:45 pm.

I am hopeful that we can get a big crowd for Saturday's meet.  We are the ONLY varsity sport which will compete against Tuscarora (and Stone Bridge) this season.  Try to encourage friends to come to cheer us on.  Let's have a "Red Out" for this meet -- have our fans wear RED to support us.

We need still need volunteers for both the pasta party (food, etc.) and for Saturday's meet (timers).  Please use the links below to register.  We need your support.

Swim: Eat, Drink, Sleep -- Nutrition Article

At Thursday's meeting, I mentioned the importance of good nutrition and hydration.  When I got home, my winter issue of "Splash" magazine arrived and there was an article in it about the importance of eating well and staying hydrated.  It also mentions the importance of getting enough sleep.  I felt that it was timely, therefore I am sharing it.

Swim Team: Week of December 7

Rams,

Congratulations on a great meet yesterday.  Coach Quinn and I are proud of your effort, your sportsmanship, and your enthusiasm...and winning the meet was nice too!

We have two weeks until our next meets (12/18 vs Loudoun Valley & 12/19 vs Tuscarora, both at Ida Lee).  We are going to take advantage of the "bye" week to get in some excellent workouts and continue to improve our conditioning.  This week's practices will include some significant yardage as we'll get in some more distance swims and some intense kicking.  Make sure you bring your equipment -- fins and pull buoys -- as we'll be putting those to use starting tomorrow.

Here is your schedule for the week:

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday -- practice from 8:30-9:30 at Lansdowne

Thursday -- team meeting from 4:00-5:00 pm in room 1206

Thursday -- OPTIONAL starts practice from 9:30-10:30 at Ida Lee

I am going to start working on the line-ups for our upcoming meets soon.  If you are going to be absent from any meets, please email me as soon as possible so that I can plan accordingly.

Swim Team: Riverside Rams Make History with Victory over John Champe

Yesterday afternoon, the Riverside Rams Swim Team opened the season with a meet against the John Champe Knights.  The Ram's boys team won convincingly, topping the Knights by 42 points -- 162 to 120.  The girls team pulled out a close one by taking first and third place in the meet's final event and winning the meet by 10 points - 148-138.  It was a great meet for both teams.

Junior Noah Koo took first place in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and freshman Jackson McCummings convincingly won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke for the boys.  In addition, Noah and Jackson led the boys 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays to victory.

For the girls, freshman Claire Nguyen qualified for the 3A State Championship Swim Meet in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterly, and 100 freestyle events as she surpassed the qualifying standards in all three events.  Claire took first place in the 200 free and 100 butterfly, and led her relay teams to first place finishes in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

It was a great day for Riverside swimming.  Our next meet is December 18 against Loudoun Valley High School.

Swim Officials Needed -- PLEASE HELP

Swimming Rams,

We desperately need officials for the swim season.  Thus far, we have no volunteers to be starter, referee, or stroke and turn officials this season.  We are required to provide officials at each meet, so we need your help.

If you have any experience with swimming, you can be an official.  To become an official, take the following steps:

1. Register online (takes 2 minutes) at the official’s website: http://vhsl.arbitersports.com/front/105753/Registration

2. After you register you’ll receive a rule book in the mail

3. Watch an online clinic on the website

4. Take the online test on the website (it is an open book test!)

**You will be reimbursed for the cost by the RVHS Athletic Department.

Please help!  If you are willing to take this on, please email me so that we know that we have some officials in the works.  As long as you are working toward the certification, you can be an official in regular season meets.

Our first meet is in two weeks (December 5).  Please help us to make this season successful.

Swim Team -- HELP NEEDED!

Swim Team Families,

I am looking for two parents to fill two important volunteer positions for the swim team -- Volunteer Coordinator & Pasta Party Coordinator.

The Volunteer Coordinator helps to ensure that we have our full requirement for volunteers at each of our swim meets.  This role does not require that you attend meets.  You can do it all remotely through online sign-ups, etc.

The Pasta Party Coordinator works with our swim team families to make sure that we have food, etc. for all of the swimmers at our weekly pasta parties.  This is another role for which all of the work is done remotely.

Our first meet and pasta party are coming soon -- the week after Thanksgiving!  The team really needs the help, so please email me if you are willing to take on either of these roles.  The kids and I would greatly appreciate it.  My email address is joel.getis@lcps.org.

Swim Team Training Opportunity

Hello future Riverside swimmers-

I know many of your thoughts are on the summer season, but it is not too early to start thinking about the upcoming high school swim season. Although time in the pool is the mainstay of any swimmer’s workouts, I would like to highly encourage you to expand your training to include dry land work. I have been very impressed with BlackBench’s athletic development Academy given their focus on long-term athlete development. Their method is very suited for swimmer’s unique needs. A good strength and conditioning program will make good swimmers better and give great swimmers the edge they need to prepare for the upper levels.

I have coordinated an OPTIONAL program for the Riverside Swim Team with BlackBench.  This is not a requirement for any athlete, however it is an excellent program for anyone who is interested.  BlackBench will be offering a limited time early registration discount for their summer Academy so I encourage you to sign up before May 9.
