Cross Country- Weekly Email (March 22-28)

Week of Monday, March 22- 28th

Runners of the Week-

This week we had 4 Runners of the Week all with a strong showing at the Wednesday meet. Congratulations to Karsen, Casey, Markus, and Griffin. Karsen is a senior and captain on the team and is often one of our top female runners. This week she led the ladies team finishing 3rd overall. Karsen ran strong from start to finish and took a little over two minutes off her time from our first meet. Way to go Karsen! Casey is a 2nd year runner on the team and managed to shave just over two minutes from her time from meet 1 to meet 2. In addition, Casey had strong push up the big hill and an even stronger finish as she changed gears as she got closer and closer to the finish line. You Go Girl Casey. Markus is a freshman on the XC team but started practicing with us this past Summer/ Fall. Markus continues to show progress by improving both on his 5K times and making progress during workouts. This past week, Markus's hard work paid off shaving just over 3 minutes from week 1 to week 2. Keep it up Markus! Our last runner of the week is Big G Cook. Griffin is a third year runner on the team and a captain. This season he came ready to go and hungry to led the boys team and that is just what he is doing! Griffin was our top scorer on the boys team for two weeks in a row and powers through every workout given to him. Last week he placed 2nd overall for the boys. Keep up the good stuff Big G!

Weekly Recap-

Last week the Rams took on a Monday workout called the Thriple Threat. Three hills back to back to back. They did a great job of pushing up each hill and it clearly paid off as almost all of our runners made a time improvement from week 1 to week 2 at Oatlands. The Rams ran hard this week on Wednesday at Oatlands with more than 75% of runners making an improvement to their times. On Saturday morning, those that attend the challenge run took to the track for some speed. On Saturday we completed the Broken 5K workout and it was great to see everyone change gears and push the pace! I am excited to see your hard work next week at our upcoming meets! A big thank you to the Cook and Dasilva Family for providing the team with our snack packs for the meet! A special shout out to the Easley family for coming up with the fun addition to the team- XC Bingo!

XC- Adopt a Senior Information

Hello XC Ramily,

Thank you so much to those parents that have already adopted a senior for senior week. We still have some seniors who are available for adoption and I know they will appreciate your support and attention, especially this year. As a reminder, as part of honoring our seniors and making their senior year special, we are hoping to have families adopt a senior.  Each day during senior week, beginning Monday 3/22, we ask that you drop off a special surprise to the house of your adopted senior.  One or two families can share in the adoption, and we ask that you cap the total spending per senior at $25.  We have a list of ‘favorites’ from each senior to get an idea of interests, but really it’s the recognition and thoughtfulness that will mean so much.  If you are interested in adopting one of our 12 seniors, please email me at zoebyer@gmail.com immediately. You can request a senior if you wish, and I can let you know if they live near you for logistical purposes. Thanks so much!

Cross Country- Week of March 15th - 21st

Week of Monday, March15th- Sunday, March 21st

Runner of the Week-

There were a number of athletes that shined this week as we took to Oatlands for the first time of the season. However two athletes in particular really went above and beyond this week and building up to this week.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Joo and Tycho Svoboda. Elizabeth is a 3 year runner on the XC team and is never not smiling! Last Saturday at our long run she ran her longest run to date, crushing a full 60 minutes of running and covering over 6 miles in length. On Wednesday, Elizabeth was our 4th runner in on the ladies side. In addition, Elizabeth has stepped up in a number of ways this season as a leader and role models for the newer and younger runners. Great work Elizabeth. Tycho is a 4 year runner on the XC team and has taken his skill set to the next level this season. He started off the season as one of the top runners for the time trial followed by the mock meet. On Wednesday, Tycho was one of our top runners on the boys side and had a Oatlands PR of by 2 minutes and 33 seconds. That's BIG time folks! Tycho's hardwork has paid off and we are excited to see his continued growth the rest of the season. Good stuff Tycho!

Weekly Recap-

This week the Rams started the week with a little bit of speed on the track to prepare for their first meet. On Wednesday, we competed against Stonebridge and Woodgrove at our first meet and boy did it feel good to be back at Oatlands after almost 500 days! The Rams had a great first showing, be sure to check out the results that went out if you have not already done so! A big shout out to all our first time runners that took on Oatlands without any preview. We had a number of athletes that shined on Wednesday and really did a nice job of attacking the finish. A few special shout outs include Emma and Griffin that lead the way for the rams as our top runners. Matthew who was moved up to wave 1 and ended up being one of our top scorers and setting a new Oatlands PR. Declan, Ethan,JY, Kate, and Brie all with standout finishes! Just to name a few. Weekly Email- Cross Country March 8th

Week of Monday, March 8th- Sunday, March 14th

Runner of the Week-

Congratulations

Chanel Harris and Nick Jones. Both Chanel and Nick are first time XC runners. In just over two weeks of training Chanel has shown tremendous progress, shaving over 3+ minutes in her 5K time. In addition, she comes to practice with a smile on her face each and every day and is ready to push hard on all the workouts! Be sure to look out for Chanel when she finishes a race, we know she has some speed as she is a Sprinter who is testing out the longer distance running! Now for Nick, we first noticed Nick in Week two prior hill workouts one of which was the past challenge run and one earlier in the season. This week he surprised us again during his 5K shaving almost a full minute off his time! Great job to both Chanel and Nick. We are excited to see you both race your first XC meet next week!

Weekly Recap-

This week the Rams had their first mock meet. The team was split into Blue (Coach Sporre) vs. Red (Coach Lyman). A number of athletes completed the 5K faster than their first tryout time which was very exciting and shows that in just a few weeks big gains have been made! After scoring the event, the Blue team won on both the boys and girls side! Coach Lyman talked a big game but in the end Coach Sporre's Blue Squad took the Win! Coach Gina was just happy to see everyone running well 🙂 A big thank you to both Ethan and Markus's family for providing the team with post race snack bags! They were delicious! All spirit wear has been delivered as well and we are looking forward to seeing the Rams sporting their new gear this season. Next week will be our first meet of the season at the one and only Oatlands. All athletes will be allowed 1 spectator to attend the meet. Spectators will need to practice social distancing and also wear a mask while attending the meet. If you DO NOT PLAN TO RIDE THE BUS, please notify Coach Gina by Tuesday evening. Cross Country- IMPORTANT INFORMATION, PLEASE READ

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL FALL ATHLETES AND PARENTS.

*Please note specific information regarding Cross Country Meets.

Riverside Parents,

This email serves to provide some important information about attendance at athletic events this upcoming “fall” season, purchasing tickets, health screening, and mitigation strategies.

SPECTATORS AT GAMES:

Per the governor’s current order (last amended on February 17), 25 spectators are permitted at indoor athletic events and 250 spectators at outdoor athletic events.  This was a change from the previous order indicating two spectators per participant (without a 250 limit).  Some LCPS contests with larger rosters (ex, varsity football games with large football and cheerleading rosters) will now not be able to accommodate two spectators per athlete.  To that end, LCPS is providing the opportunity for one ticket to be purchased per fall athletes at each athletic contest.  The same admission process is used for both home and away teams.   Any remaining tickets, short of the 200 ticket limit, will open for purchase through Ticket Spicket at 12 noon the day of the contest.  The total ticket limit is 200, rather than 250, because cheerleaders are deemed spectators per the governor’s current order.

PURCHASING TICKETS:

LCPS has secured Ticket Spicket, a contactless ticket vendor for all athletic events. The ticket purchasing experience should make the purchaser feel comfortable; the process is more efficient, contactless, and secure.  Cash will not be accepted at the gate; all tickets must be purchased through Ticket Spicket.  Ticket Spicket has an app available for free download (search Ticket Spicket) to your smartphone devices, or you can access it through your web browser at https://ticketspicket.com.  Tickets can be purchased through the app or online.  Click “Buy Tickets” and search “Riverside High School Leesburg, VA.”

**Ticket Spicket should be opening tickets for purchases in the next couple of days, at which point tickets can begin to be purchased**

One redeemable code is available per athlete.  The code is your athlete’s student ID number.  Tickets are only available for the game in which they are playing (ex, a football parent cannot buy a field hockey ticket).  Once a ticket has  been purchased with the student ID, no more tickets can be purchased for that game with that student ID.  Tickets purchased with the student ID code must be purchased before 12 noon the day of the game.  200 tickets will not be purchased for most athletic contests per this process, so remaining tickets,  short of the 200 limit, will be made available for purchase at 12 noon the day of each game.  Please communicate with your family so you are aware who is buying the ticket with the student ID.  Tickets can be purchased in advance, as the whole season is currently available for purchase.  Tickets will remain on sale through the beginning of that game, as long as the 200 ticket limit has not been met.   Riverside plans to communicate the 12 noon open ticket process to our fall athletes’ families only in hopes that more of your family will be able to attend your child’s games.   The 12 noon ticket window will not require a student ID code to purchase.

REFUNDS:

If the game is canceled, refunds will be issued through Ticket Spicket.  Contact support@ticketspicket.com.  If a ticket is purchased, but the purchaser does not attend the game, refunds are not issued.  If a game is rescheduled, tickets will automatically be redeemable for the rescheduled date.

AT THE TICKET GATE:

Follow signage, as some schools may be using different ticket entrance for home and away fans.  The purchaser should have the ticket showing on their phone.  Do not “tear” your ticket on your phone until you arrive at the gate and the ticket manager instructs you to do so.  Additionally, all spectators/officials/visitors/media will have to complete an online health questionnaire prior to entering the contest.  The questionnaire is available at https://tinyurl.com/LCPSAthleticsSCREENING and should be filled out prior to walking to the gate.  A green check mark marks the end of the questionnaire.  Please have that screenshot available and ready to show on your phone as well as the purchased ticket.  Every individual person must complete the questionnaire.

HEALTH MITIGATION STRATEGIES:

As well as completing the online health questionnaire, other mitigation strategies will be in place.  Follow facility signage for locations to sit.  Most schools will have bleachers marked signifying where each person needs to sit.  Those locations are distanced from one another.  Family members in the same household can sit at the same bleacher location.

All spectators, coaches, athletes, and school officials need to wear masks at all times throughout the athletic contest.

All spectators are to remain socially distanced at all times (in the bleachers, walking throughout the venue, in the restroom, etc).

Multiple games on the same night (ex, F/JV/Var volleyball, field hockey, and F/JV football)—fans will be instructed to leave the facility immediately when the contest finishes.  Spectators for the next game will be waiting outside the stadium (or In the hallway for volleyball).  Plan to arrive immediately before the game if you do not want to be waiting outside the venue.  Once the facility is vacated by the prior game’s spectators, the next game’s spectators can enter.

CROSS COUNTRY:

Because meets often have different numbers of competing teams, spectator limits per athlete will be communicated by host schools.  Each cross country race will adhere to the governor’s limit of 250 spectators.     Possible spectator admission fees are subject to the facility’s procedures and will be communicated by the host school.  Ticket Spicket will not be used for cross country.

GOLF:

Spectator policies and allowances will be communicated by the host school, as each course may have different policies in place.  Ticket Spicket will not be used for golf.

NFHS Network:

All contests in LCPS stadiums and main gymnasiums will be broadcast live on the NFHS Network.  In the same manner as winter sports, subscriptions can be purchased at http://www.NFHSNetwork.com.  Please see the following announcement regarding the NFHS Network that was sent to winter athletes’ families.  These instructions remain the same for our “fall” sports season.

Riverside High School is proud to announce that we have partnered with the NFHS Network to broadcast our Rams athletic events LIVE. That means that if you or family members can’t make it to the game, the live action can be watched from anywhere on your phone, tablet, computer or smart TV.

LCPS has been working for the last year on the partnership with the NFHS Network to broadcast live all LCPS athletic contests.  This process started well before the current COVID pandemic, but obviously the NFHS Network now provides a platform for LCPS families to watch any sporting event in the county during the current pandemic and spectator restrictions.  Even after COVID, the NFHS Network will be a great way to watch games when you cannot attend or for out of town family and friends to watch games.  Anyone with a subscription can watch any of our athletic contests.

By subscribing to the NFHS Network you get full access to all content on the network for our school and any other broadcast nationwide!  Subscribing is easy:

1.Go to NFHSnetwork.com

2.Enter “Riverside High School – Leesburg, VA” in search box

3.Click “Follow” so you can stay up to date on all upcoming Rams broadcasted events

4.Click “Subscribe” for all subscription options for our school

This subscription is made with the NFHS Network, not LCPS.  The subscription can be monthly or annual.  Note that the subscription allows viewing for any game on the NFHS Network in the country, as well as all main gyms, stadiums, baseball fields, and softball fields within LCPS.

Thank you for your continued support of Riverside athletics. We look forward to bringing you top notch broadcasts of our athletic events!

Cross Country- Weekly Email ( Wk of 2/22)

Runner of the Week- Brady Cook

Brady Cook "Little Cook" is a first year runner and a freshman at Riverside. This may be his first season with the Rams XC squad but he is no stranger to the sport as his older brother Big G has been a member since his freshman year. Brady started to show his hussle back in the summer and fall when we were conditioning and he has been spotted a number of times this winter logging miles out in Lansdowne. In just the first few days of tryouts, he is often found at the front of the pack and working hard in all areas including drills, warming -up, and running.

In the first week, Brady had made a lasting first impression and we are eXCited to see what he will do this season and many years to come. He has big shoes to fill but something tells us he is up for the challenge! After all he has a great role model (Brother Big G) to look up too.

Nice work Brady Cook. Keep up the hard work!

Cross Country- Friday, Feb 19th

There will be no in person practice today. If you have access to a treadmill or indoor bike please do 30 minutes of cardio. If you are near a clear and SAFE road complete your run outside. Key word there if it is SAFE.

We will not meet on Saturday, over the weekend all runners should plan to do a 30-45 minute run on their own. The pace should be easy and comfortable and again find a location that is clear and SAFE.

*If you have access to an indoor treadmill or bike you can do both inside.

We will see you on Monday.

XC- 2021 FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

2021 XC FAQs- Frequently Asked Questions.

Here's a few questions that you have been asked frequently.

2021 XC Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect for tryouts?

Please refer to the 2021 Tryout Requirements document located on RIversideRams.Net under Team Files.

What do I need for practice?

-Water bottle with name label

-Hand sanitizer kept in car or with bag

-Come in practice attire to include running shoes and workout clothing ( ready to run)

-Watch with stopwatch, GPS watch not required but if you have access to one wear that.

-Athletic face mask ( check team news for suggested brands)

- Form completed prior to 12PM daily. - LCPS COVID Form

Do I have to wear a mask?

YES! All coaches and athletes are required to wear face coverings. Face coverings must be cleaned daily and worn at all times. A cloth face mask, disposable face mask, or neck gaiter meet these requirements. If anything changes regarding the county face mask requirements you will be informed. For now you should prepare to have a face mask on at all times during practice.

How long is practice?

Practices will typically last 90 minutes in some cases we will have shorter or longer practices. Please refer to the weekly schedule for start/ end times.

How far in advance will I have the weekly practice schedule?

The practice schedule will be published by Sunday morning prior to the week. Please note that weekly schedules are subject to change. Be sure to stay in the loop by checking team emails, team facebook page, and team remind text.

Will there be practice over spring break?

No. However, you are expected to practice on your own. A training plan will be distributed a week prior to Spring Break.

Will there be practice when it's cold out, rain, snow day, etc.?

We practice in most conditions, please be prepared to attend in almost any weather conditions. If practice is canceled we will inform you via the team remind text, facebook page, and team email. Please make sure you are prepared with layers! Athletes should have ears and head covered. and wear long sleeves and pants. Coaches will constantly monitor weather conditions and will communicate through if practice needs to be cancelled. We will do our best to give you as much advance notice as possible.

Will there be water available?

No. Each athlete must bring their own water bottle labeled with your name. Team water coolers will not be available.

Will I be able to use the bathroom?

Locker rooms are not utilized at LCPS schools this season. Athletes will arrive dressed in practice gear or meet uniform. Please use the restroom before coming to practice and/or meet. Bathroom access will be very limited if not available at all when we are off-campus.

Will there be pasta parties?

No. To limit the spread of COVID 19, we can not hold our traditional gathering the night before the meet. However, we have some fun activities planned to unite our team that will be announced soon.

Will my family and friends be able to watch the meets or come to practices?

TBD

Will there be practice at Oatlands?

No, Practices will either be held at Riverside High School or other off-site locations such as Trailside Park and other local parks.

Will we be taking a bus to the meets?

TBD.

Am I required to take the bus to and from meets?

No, but athletes are not able to drive themselves. Parents MUST provide transportation to and from meets if you are not riding the bus. Athletes and parents will need to communicate with Coach Gina at least 24 hours prior to if you are not riding the bus in an EMAIL. Emails can be sent to Riversidexctf@gmail.com

What will the uniform be?

We will have two uniforms- the first will be our team singlet and shorts. The second will be an Under Armour long sleeve tech shirt that can be found on the teams' spiritwear store and black pants or leggings. The weather will determine the uniform for meets. Athletes can purchase the Under Armour long sleeve on the team spirit wear portal. See below.

https://www.storessimple.com/restonshirt/groupproducts.php?prodgroup_id=10448&prodgroupbypass=true

Will there be parent volunteers for meet days?

TBD , we hope so!

Where's the team schedule?

Riversiderams.net

Is carpooling allowed?

We highly suggest that athletes ride to and from practice on their own and avoid riding together. The only exception is for athletes that are in the same pod.

What if I am sick or a family member?

Communicate with the coach immediately and stay home.

I love running, is XC right for me?

Ummm, ABSOLUTELY.

You still haven't answered my question...

Got more questions, email Coach Gina at RiversideXCTF@gmail.com

Cross Country- Tryout Information

Rams,

We are just over a month away from the start of XC season. Below are a few items as we get closer to the start of the season. Please review the items and reach out if you have any additional questions.

Recommendations/ Action Items:

*First and foremost, if you have not already done so you MUST turn in all athletic paperwork and have it completed prior to tryouts in order to participate. No paperwork, No play.

*Mask: All LCPS athletes participating in Cross Country will be required to wear a mask for both practice and racing. This being said it is my recommendation that if you have not already done so that you start to run, workout, and exercise with a mask on to get you use to the feel. This will be something that will be required and it is best to get in the habit of practicing with one on while you run/ sweat/ and are pushing you body in an athletic way.

*Find a mask that works well for working out. There are a number of mask that are best for athletes my recommendation is to find one that works for you and that you feel most comfortable in while running/ working out. A few good choices that work for athletes are as follows: Under Armour Sportsmask and Zensah Performance Mask. If you have any additional recommendations please feel free to share that with teammates as well!

*Hopefully you have been running and staying active. Regardless of your current shape as we get closer to the start of the season my recommendation is that you run 4-6 days a week anywhere from 3-8 miles a day depending on your current fitness level and skill/ ability level. Be sure to run on hills and vary your speed on different days. If you need help with a training plan feel free to reach out.

*Be sure to get outside for as many runs as possible, the weather will only get colder. Practice in this weather because this will be what we race in as well. Dress in layers and try to find peak times to run.

*Speaking of weather, on days where there is ice try to avoid running on ice and instead opt for a treadmill or cross train. We don’t want anyone to get hurt before the season starts.

*Stay healthy. Please continue to make smart decisions and practice keeping your distance and avoiding large groups. Your health is not only important for you but also for the entire team. In order for us to have a season and have a season that last, we must all stay healthy.

Now for tryout information:

Before we go into detail, please know that all of this is subject to change. As you know changes occur weekly, daily, and even hourly. We thank you in advance for being understanding and flexible and know that we are doing our best to give you the correct information as changes occur. If things change we will keep you informed. In addition, many of you have had questions and probably continue to have questions, please know that we are doing our best to answer them with the knowledge we have but somethings we do not have answers to at this time.

Here are the possibilities for tryouts, we hope to go with plan A but will know closer to the start date which plan we will go with. You should be prepared for any and all of these.

Cross Country- Thank You Coach Loffredo, Welcome Coach Sporre.

We would like to give a big thank you to Coach Loffredo for her dedication, time, and commitment to the Riverside Cross Country team. Coach Loffredo will be leaving us this season after 3 years with the RAMily.

It has been a true pleasure getting the chance to work with Coach Loffredo and building memories with all our Rams together.

Thank you Coach L. You are always part of the ramily!

For the Fall (Winter) 2021 Cross Country season, we would like to welcome Coach Michelle Sporre. This is Coach Sporre's first season coaching but she is no stranger to the RAMily. Prior to joining the coaching staff she was one of the Rams biggest cheerleaders. Coach Sporre is the mom of Matthew, Ellie ( Class of 2020), and Christian (Class of 2020).

Coach Lyman and I are very excited to have Coach Sporre join the coaching staff!
