RVHS Swim, week of February 10, 2020

RVHS Swim - Week of February 3, 2020

Rams,

What a fun week we had.  Practices on Monday and Tuesday were energetic, efficient, and effective.  Then came Wednesday…

The entire school was talking about the swim team on Wednesday.  The spirit challenge was fantastic.  Both teams had great outfits, but the Boys Team concept was a bit clearer to the RVHS staff, so they won the vote in a landslide.  But then, it came time to race.  The excitement, the comradery, the plain ol’ fun that was alive in the pool was amazing.  The Girls defended their title, but at the end I think the entire time won.  Almost everyone has told me that it was their favorite day of the year.

Now it’s time to bring that same excitement, energy, and RAMily team spirit to Regionals.  At practices this week, we’ll be doing some fine-tuning, including some video analysis, as we prepare for Saturday’s meet.  Maintain the focus.  Pay attention to the details. Eat well. Swim smartly. Rest completely.

Regional Championship Meet Information

Prelims – Racing starts at 9:30 am. Gates open at 8:00 am. Admission is $7.

Finals – Racing starts at 5:30 pm. Gates open at 4:00 pm. Admission is $7.

Meet sheets will be sold at the meet for $3 each.

I will distribute a Meet Psych Sheet when it is published – no later than Thursday morning.

We will travel to/from Claude Moore via bus.  The bus schedule is:

7:15 am - Depart RVHS for Claude Moore

12:30 pm - Depart Claude Moore for RVHS

3:15 pm - Depart RVHS for Claude Moore

8:00 pm - Depart Claude Moore for RVHS

All swimmers will travel TO the meet on the bus.  Swimmers may travel home with their parents provided I am given written notification by Thursday, February 6 at 5:00 pm (email is fine).

We will order boxed lunches from Panera to be delivered to school for anyone who wants to eat.  I ask that all swimmers complete the order form even if you are not ordering anything.  There is a choice to say you are not ordering.  Please complete this by 5:00 pm on Monday, February 3.

Here is the link to place your order.

After ordering, please submit payment via the RVHS online payment portal.

Payment - http://bit.ly/314xJ0n

We still need one stroke and turn official for Saturday’s finals.  Here is the link to register:

RVHS Swim - Week of January 27, 2020

Rams,

Congratulations on a fantastic regular season.  Both teams finished 8-1, both teams improved significantly throughout the season, everyone had a lot of fun, and we showed (again) why the Riverside Rams Swim Teams are the best teams around.  Way to go!

Now, we get to work.  It’s post-season time, which means that we need to take our performances up a notch.  Practice will be about the details – fine-tuning our strokes, our turns, and our attitudes.  The Regional Championship and State Championship Meets bring us new challenges, and new opportunities.  Coach Keeton and I are excited about what we can (and will) do this post-season.

We are working on finalizing the line-up for Regionals and I will distribute it later today.  Only those swimmers competing at Regionals will be practicing this week and next.  However, EVERYONE will be at practice on Wednesday for the Boys vs Girls Meet.  In addition, EVERYONE will participate with the team at Friday’s Winter Sports Pep-Rally.

With the Boys vs Girls Meet this week, we have an additional Spirit Day with 5 points to be won.  On Wednesday, each team will conduct its own Spirit Day.  Once again, I will ask the RVHS staff to vote to determine the winner.  Then, on Wednesday, we race with the champion to be determined at the meet.  I will be distributing the meet sheet for the Boys vs Girls meet shortly.

Here is the schedule for this week:

Week of January 27:

Monday:  Regional Swimmers Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday:  Regional Swimmers Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Wednesday:  Boys vs Girls Meet at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Thursday:  Regional Swimmers Team meeting in room 1402 at 4:15 pm

Regional Swimmers Starting blocks practice at Ida Lee, 9:30-10:30 pm

Friday:  REST

Saturday: REST

This is going to be a great week.  Let’s have some fun, use the break from meets to re-energize, and get ready for an amazing post-season run.

RVHS Swim - Week of January 6, 2020

Rams,

This weekend was physically and mentally difficult. Having two meets without any full weeks of practice was tough.  Now that our “break” is behind us, we are ready for the exciting home stretch of the regular season and then into the championship season.  We can now get back into our regular schedules and get our minds and bodies back in synch.

With only three weeks left in the regular season, it’s time to focus on your goals.  Take a look at what you are doing.  Are you eating well, getting enough sleep, practicing efficiently, etc?  If you are not getting the results that you want, what should you change?  Make sure that you are having fun while working toward your goals.

Our meet this week is our most challenging dual meet of the season.  Briar Woods took first place at the Loudoun County Invitational meet.  They feel pretty good about themselves right now.  We’re very hungry.  We need to have a great week of practice and bring our best energy, effort, and support of one another to Saturday’s meet.  It’s our turn this weekend.

Here is the schedule for this week:

Week of January 6:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm.

Wednesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Thursday:  Team meeting in room 1402 at 4:15 pm.

Starting blocks practice at Ida Lee, 9:30-10:30 pm

Friday:  Pasta Party at the Byer’s house - 43477 Calphams Mill Court in Lansdowne, 6:00 pm

Saturday: Swim Meet vs. Briar Woods at Claude Moore.  Warm-ups start at 3:00 pm, so be at the pool no later than 2:45 pm.

Coach Keeton and I are completing the line-up and will distribute it soon.

RVHS Swim - Weeks of December 23 and 30, 2019

Rams,

Congratulations on an amazing meet yesterday.  We let everyone know that we are the best team in the County.  While Briar Woods may have scored more points, we had more fun, cheered the loudest, and showed everyone what a team really looks like.  And…let’s not forget that Ram Fans DOMINATED the spectator section.  It was a sea of Riverside Ram Red up there and we loved all the support.

I hope that everyone takes the next two weeks to rest up, refresh, and enjoy the time with your families. However…don’t skip swimming.  When we return to school, we have 6 meets remaining in the regular season – over a 3-week period.  You HAVE TO stay in shape.  With only two days of full practices (December 23 and 30) and one blocks practice (December 26) available to us, it is up to each of you to take responsibility for your own swim workouts.

We have much yet to accomplish this season.  Skipping workouts over these two weeks will be a major step backward for you.  Don’t let that happen!

Here is your schedule for the next two weeks:

Monday (12/23):  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday (12/24):  Swim on your own

Wednesday (12/25): Merry Christmas!

Thursday (12/26): Starting blocks practice at Ida Lee, 9:30-10:30 pm

Friday (12/27):  Swim on your own

Saturday (12/28): Swim on your own

RVHS Swim week of December 16, 2019

Rams,

It was a great introduction to the Dulles South pool yesterday for the Riverside Rams.  We had some great swims, some significant improvements, and a two dominant victories.

Our work is paying off, but we still have much to improve upon.  We be working hard again this week to continue our journey of continuous improvement.  We need to focus on the little things (break-outs, turns, and finishes) a bit more during practice to change some of our habits.

This week is the first annual Loudoun County Championship meet. The meet is on Saturday at Claude Moore Recreation Center.  Coach Keeton and I are working on the line-up and should have that finalized later today.  We will travel to/from the meet via busses, as is our norm for championship meets.  The bus will LEAVE Riverside at 8:30 am on Saturday, so you must be at school by 8:15 am.  As always, you are required to travel to the meet with the team. If you will not be traveling back to RVHS on the bus, a note (email is acceptable) is required no later than Thursday at 5:00 pm.

This will be a long meet, with all 16 Loudoun County high schools expected to participate.  That will lead to as many as 6 heats per individual event and 2 heats per relay event.  While there will be food trucks on site, I encourage swimmers to bring meet appropriate snacks and drinks for the meet.  Food is fuel.

At our team meeting on December 5, we established our goals for the season.  As a reminder, here they are:

Girls Team Goals

Win the Boys vs Girls Meet

Drop 300 seconds in cumulative time in the season – UPDATE - 11.94 dropped thus far

Place in the top 3 in all Championship Meets

Boys Team Goals

Win the Regional Championship

TEAM Goals

Top Combined Points at State Championship Meet

***PARENTS – We need stroke and turn officials for our meets. ***

RVHS Swim - Week of December 9, 2019

Rams,

What a great first weekend of the season.  Both teams started the season 3-0 and we have learned a lot about our team and the challenges that rising to Class 5 competition presents to us.  The cut times are tougher, the competition is stronger, and the road ahead will be more difficult than in years past.

I know that we are up to the challenges, and I am confident that we will take our learnings and apply them to our practices to continue to improve on race days.

As I told the team last night, I will miss all practices this week and there will be no team meeting on Thursday.  My mother’s husband passed away the other day and I am heading to South Carolina tomorrow to help my mother with some things.  I will be back on Friday and at our meet on Saturday.

I will have full access to email, Remind, text, phone, etc., so if you need anything, please contact me.  I may not respond right away, but I will get back to you.  Coach Keeton has everything covered for practices, as she always does, and I know that you will work extremely hard for her (and yourselves) this week.

I know that the NHS Holiday party is on Tuesday and that many of you will miss practice because of that.  There is no need to notify me if you are in NHS and attending the party.  I have that information already.

***PARENTS – We are need stroke and turn officials for our meets. ***

We still have one opening for a lucky family to host a pasta party – Thursday, January 2, 2020.  What better way to start off the new year than by having 60 of your favorite swimmers at your house?  Hurry up and grab the last spot before someone else does!!

I need to remind everyone about the VHSL attendance/participation policy.  Students must be in school by 9:30 a.m. on the day of an event to be able to participate (this includes practice).  Students may be late if, and only if, they have a medical appointment AND when arriving at school they have a note from the doctor.  The note must state that the student is medically cleared to participate in the day’s event.  Without this, students will not be allowed to participate in the event.  This also applies for leaving school earlier than the student’s regular dismissal time. There is no flexibility in this, so please be sure to adhere to the policy.  In fact, I recommend that you do not schedule appointments, etc. on the days of meets, if possible.  Come to school on time and stay at school all day.

For Friday’s meet, we are traveling by bus, as a team, to/from Winchester.  Athletes may opt to travel home with their parents.  If an athlete wishes to travel home with his/her parents, I must receive WRITTEN notification by Thursday, December 5 at 6:00 pm.

Friday: Swim Meet vs John Handley & James Wood (A) 7:00 pm at Barnett Park - 1001 E Cork St, Winchester, VA 22601.  Team dinner at 4:30 pm in cafeteria. Bus leaves RVHS at 5:30 pm.

Saturday: Swim Meet vs Potomac Falls (H) at Ida Lee.  Warm-ups start at 8:00 pm so be at the pool no later than 7:45 pm.

Coach Keeton and I are finalizing the line-ups for both meets.  Friday’s meet has been changed to a tri-meet with Handley and James Wood, which affects our entries.  Once I receive the guidelines from Handley (the host), we can finalize things.  I will send a separate email with the line-ups.

RVHS Swim Week of November 25, 2019

Rams,

We had a great first week of practice.  Coach Keeton and I are thrilled with our progress and impressed that you came in ready to go and worked hard throughout.  Although we only have two practices this week, we will expect similar focus and effort as we head into Thanksgiving and then into our meet schedule the following week.

Remember to bring your equipment from now on – fins, buoys, and snorkels.  We will be starting to use gear and you must have it with you to have an effective practice.

If your parents are not receiving email from me, please make sure that they get their email address to me. I want to make sure everyone is fully informed throughout the season.

I have started to work on line-up planning for the season.  To effectively plan for events and set up the team for its best post-season opportunities, I need to know if swimmers will be missing any meets.  If there are any meets that you’ll be missing, I need to be informed TODAY, November 24. If I don’t hear from you, that means that you will be available for every meet and I will plan as such.

With our first meets coming next week (December 6 and 7), it’s time to start getting parents registered to volunteer at meets. For each meet, we need as many as 17 volunteers. This includes timers, which require no special training, as well as meet officials (Starter/Referee, and Stroke & Turn officials). If you are interested in being a meet official, here is a link to the instructions to complete the VHSL process - https://riversiderams.net/library/files/riversideathletics.bigteams_com_145966/files/VHSL%20Official%20Registration.pdf

Caitlin Olsen is leading our volunteer efforts this year as our team Volunteer Coordinator. A sign-up has been sent out, but very few slots have been filled so far. Please sign up to volunteer.  Without timers, officials, etc., there is no swim meet.  Here is the link to register for each meet.  We don’t have a minimum volunteer requirement; however, we expect everyone to volunteer to work at meets during the season.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080f45adac29a3fe3-swim

In addition, before each meet, our team holds pasta parties. Florence Iglesias is coordinating our pasta parties for this season. She will be sending out information for families to register to bring the food, drinks, etc.  Look for that information soon.

To have the parties, we need hosts.  Several of the dates have been taken (thank you!), but we still have a few still available.  In fact, we need a host for our first pasta party of the season, December 5.  Here is the link to sign up to volunteer to host a past party - https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a44aeae22aa8-rvhswim

Here is your schedule for the week of November 25:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

It’s a short week of school and practice.  Let’s make it productive and efficient.  I strongly suggest that you try to get to the pool one or two times on your own over the break.  Not swimming for nearly a week is not recommended.  Get in some pool time, then rest up, enjoy Thanksgiving with your families, and come back ready to get our meets started.

As a reminder, if you ever want to purchase additional suits, gear, etc., please make the purchase through the Riverside Rams Swim Team Store on SwimOutlet - https://www.swimoutlet.com/rvhsramsswim/

The team earns a residual/commission on all sales.

RVHS Swim, Week of November 18, 2019

Rams,

Welcome to the 2019-20 swim season.  We look forward to our first year as a 5A school and the new challenges that moving up presents to us.  It is going to be a great year!  Coach Keeton (formerly Quinn) and I are looking forward to getting to work this week.

As we discussed at our meeting on Thursday, we had a great tryout week with some great swims.  However, there are many of you who showed up “not quite ready for prime time.”  We are going to prime you up starting on Monday! be ready to practice HARD over the coming weeks.  We have only 3 weeks (8 swim practices and one dive practice) to get ready for our first meets – December 6 and December 7 (yes, we start off with a back-to-back weekend).

If you have not already done so, please take care of the following as quickly as possible:

We need to be extremely organized and respectful at the pool. The Lansdowne HOA is carefully watching us and we need to make sure that we follow their rules.  As such, please arrive at 8:00 pm so that we can stretch, etc.  Then, we will head out to the pool and be ready to enter the pool at EXACTLY 8:15 pm.  We did this extremely well on last week.  Let’s keep it up.

Also, we always finish practice on time.  Therefore, we request that all parents to please be at the pool to pick up your swimmers at 9:15.  This will avoid having swimmers (and coaches) standing outside in the cold waiting for pick-ups.

We welcome you to show your team spirit and demonstrate support for the team by purchasing and wearing some official Rams Swim Team gear.  The online store will be open until Thursday, November 20. Orders placed will be delivered in bulk to me for individual distribution.  There’s some great stuff available. Check it out!

https://rss19.itemorder.com/sale

You can also purchase your team suit any swim equipment that you need through the Riverside Rams Swim Team Store on SwimOutlet - https://www.swimoutlet.com/rvhsramsswim/

You can purchase any swim items that you want/need on SwimOutlet and by entering through the Rams Swim Team Store, the team earns a residual payment.

Here is your schedule for the week of November 18:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Tuesday:

  • Team picture after school.  Please wear your team shirt and pants without holes for the picture (jeans preferred).  Swimmers should gather in room 1402 no later than 4:30 pm.  We should be done by 5:45 pm.  Bring your picture forms to the team picture session if you wish to purchase pictures.
  • **If you are interested eating pizza while we wait for our picture, please let me know.  I am accepting donations to pay for the pizza.**
  • Winter Sports Parent’s Meeting at RVHS Auditorium, 7:00 pm
  • Practice at Lansdowne, 8:009:15 pm

Wednesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 8:00-9:15 pm

Thursday:

  • Team Meeting at RVHS room 1402, 4:155:15 pm
    • Among other things, we will be discussing our goals for the season and electing team captains for the season.
    • Team captains will be nominated by the coaches and elected by the team.  There will be 2 captains for the girl’s team, and 2 captains for the boy’s team.
  • Starting Blocks Practice at Ida Lee, 9:3010:30 pm
  • ***Note that this is our ONLY starting blocks practice before our first meets.***
