Rams,

This journey started over 3 months ago, and here we are – it’s time for States!  We have 13 swimmers competing in the Class 5 State Championship meet on Saturday and it’s going to be a lot of fun.  The State Championship meet is always exciting with some incredible swimmers from around the state and I’m excited for our Rams Swimmers to show Virginia what we’ve got.

I strongly encourage everyone to try to attend. It is something that everyone on the team should see and experience at some point. Gather your friends and take a ride on Saturday!

This week, you will rest (get more sleep), fine tune, get focused…and BELIEVE in what you can accomplish! You be energized and ready for Saturday to be your best – better than you’ve ever been.

RVHS Swim week of January 19, 2026

Posted on 01/18/2026 | Joel Getis

Rams,

It was a great weekend of meets for the Rams. On Friday night, you brought your best and fought hard against a talented and deep Briar Woods team. Then, on Saturday, you continued to excel with some excellent swims against Dominion.

Most impressive to me was your support for one another and teamwork that we showed. When we had a swimmer encounter challenges in the pool during his event, the ENTIRE team came to his support, cheering him on, and urging him to do his best. And he did. Then, when another swimmer had a medical issue, everyone rushed to her aid to ensure that she was cared for appropriately and that she was OK.

Being a great Ram isn’t about what we do in the water, it’s what we do everywhere. You are great Rams and I’m proud to be part of a team with you all.

We are heading into our last two weeks of the regular season with only FIVE full practices remaining – 3 this week and then 2 next week with our Boys vs Girls meet happening next Wednesday. We have a couple highly competitive meets left on the schedule and then it’s on to the Post-Season.

On Saturday, we recognize and thank our seniors at our meet against Freedom. We’ll start it off with our annual parade through the neighborhoods. I have included details on how senior day works below.

I am still working on our lineups for this weekend. As soon as I have them ready, I will distribute them to you.

Parents – we need one timer for Saturday’s meet.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0A44AEAE22AA8-60112158-freedom#/

Senior Day Celebration

On Saturday, we celebrate our 10 seniors (6 swimmers and 4 managers). We’ll kick things off with our parade during which we’ll visit every senior swimmer’s house, deliver gifts, and annoy their neighbors with celebratory noise.  Each senior will join the parade as we work our way through the neighborhoods and, after celebrating our final senior on the route, we’ll caravan to Ashburn for our meet with Freedom. During the break of the meet (immediately following 50 free), we’ll hold our “Senior Night” ceremony.  I’ll send more information about the parade route, timing, etc. shortly in a separate email.

Here is your schedule for the week of January 19:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Wednesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Thursday: Team Meeting, 4:30-5:15 pm

Friday:  Pasta Party at the Duggan’s – 20092 Blackwolf Run Place, Ashburn – 6:00-8:00 pm

Saturday: Senior Parade in the morning leading us to…Senior Day Meet vs Freedom. We’ll meet at Riverside at 10:00 am to start the parade. The meet starts at 12:00 pm.

Enjoy your Sunday and the fact that you can sleep in on Monday because there is no school.

Go Rams!

RVHS Swim Week of January 12, 2026

Posted on 01/11/2026 | Joel Getis

Rams,

You were presented with an opportunity to be exceptional yesterday, and you were. You delivered in the water, and on the deck, swimming great races and supporting one another throughout the long day. The Briar Woods Invitational was a tremendous success for the Riverside Swim Teams. Way to go!

The Boys Team earned 10 points for the Boys vs Girls Meet. The Boys improved times in 31 swims, topping a great effort by the Girls who improved in 27 swims. Further, the Boys beat their seed in 11 events yesterday. The Girls topped their seed in 2 events. Congratulations on a great day.

Now we head into our toughest part of the regular season. On Friday, we take on Briar Woods at Ida Lee. This is a District meet and could determine the District Championship. It’s going to be an exciting meet and I know they’ll want revenge for our victories last season. Then, on Saturday, we race against Dominion in an out-of-District meet. They have several talented swimmers, and we’ll have some great races then too.

Our practices this week will include a lot of work on habits and details that can help us all to continue to improve. For Monday and Tuesday, we will have some great swimming, and then we’ll have some station work on Wednesday to iron out details as we head into Friday and Saturday.

I am working on lineups now and should be able to post those later today.

Here is your schedule for the week of January 11:

Monday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Wednesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Thursday: Team Meeting, 4:30-5:15 pm

Friday: Swim Meet vs Briar Woods at Ida Lee. Be at the pool ready to swim no later than 6:45 pm.

Saturday: Swim Meet vs Dominion at Claude Moore. Be at the pool ready to swim no later than 11:45 am.

Go Rams!

RVHS Swim Week of January 5, 2026

Posted on 01/04/2026 | Joel Getis

Rams,

Yesterday was a lot of fun and it was a great start to 2026 for the Riverside Swim Teams. We are in a great position to make a run at some Championships, and our first opportunity comes on Saturday with the Briar Woods Invitational Swim Meet where we’ll compete against all the Loudoun County High School Teams.

This week we get back to our normal sleeping, eating, school and practice schedule. It’s been a great two weeks of rest, and now we have the excitement and fun of the last few weeks of the regular season ahead of us.

In addition to the Briar Woods Invitational this week, we have our first intra-squad racing event and we’ll crown our King and Queen of the Pool on Wednesday at practice. This is always a fun event and I look forward to exciting races. The brackets have been created and posted to RiversideRams.net.

https://bigteams-public-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/library/files/riversideathletics.bigteams_com_145966/files/20260107%20-%20Battle%20of%20the%20Pool.pdf

The line-up for the meet is attached. Please do not share or discuss what you are swimming with other teams for this meet. Significant work has been put in to try to maximize our points and we do not want other teams to know what our lineup includes.

Because this is a Championship Meet, we are limited on entries – 3 swimmers per individual event, and 1 relay entry per relay event. While not all swimmers on the team are entered in the meet, all swimmers are expected to attend, cheer on their teammates, and be prepared to fill-in on a relay in an emergency. We will travel by bus to the meet together (more on this below).

Parents – Please note that there is an admission fee for this meet of $7.00 for spectators.

Here are some meet details:

Location: Claude Moore Recreation Center

Competition begins at 11:00 am (Gates open at 9:30 am).

This will be a LONG meet with 5 heats of each individual event and 2 heats of each relay. Plan appropriately with snacks, etc. There are no concessions available.

All swimmers are required to ride the bus with the team to the meet.  If you do not wish to ride the bus back to school with the team after the meet, I need WRITTEN notification (email, please) from a parent by 5:00 pm on Thursday.

Here is your schedule for the week of January 5:

Monday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Wednesday: King/Queen of the Pool at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Thursday: Team Meeting, 4:30-5:15 pm

Friday: Pasta Party at the Ndrue’s – 19223 Chartier Drive – 6:00-8:00 pm.

Saturday: Briar Woods Invitational Meet at Claude Moore. Be at the Riverside no later than 8:10 am for the bus.

RVHS Swim - Closing out 2025 - Your Schedule

Posted on 12/21/2025 | Joel Getis

Rams,

Yesterday was a battle for many of us. This is not because of the challenge that Loudoun Valley presented in the pool, but because of the mental and physical exhaustion that we are all dealing with during this Thanksgiving to New Year’s stretch. You fought hard, you showed spirit, and you achieved strong victories and some excellent swims. We are set up for an amazing run in January and beyond.

You did this through hard work, fast swimming, and energetic support of one another.  Team does make a difference.  Keep fighting for one another and great things will happen.

Believe it or not, we are now at the middle of the regular season – Monday is practice #15 of our 30 regular season practices.  We have a total of 6 weeks remaining – two shortened weeks of during winter break and then our crazy stretch of 5 dual meets and the Briar Woods Invitational Championship meet from January 3 to 31.  We cannot lose focus or take time off now.  We have begun the season strongly and have championship opportunities (Briar Woods Invite and District and Regional Championships). It’s time to make ourselves into the Champions that we can become.

This week, we’ll have great practices on Monday and Tuesday and then, hopefully, you’ll hit the pool at least once more on your own each week. The same is true for the week of December 29 to wrap up 2025.

Remember that while these practices are considered semi-optional (attendance is required at least 2 of 4 practices), there are Boys vs Girls points on the line – the highest percentage attendance wins 5 points per week. The Girls hold a 10-point lead right now.

When we return to our full schedule in January, we’ll have our Battle in the Pool and determine our King and Queen of the Pool for 2025-26. Who will win this year’s crowns? It’s going to be a lot of fun.

To help you plan, here is your schedule over the next 3 weeks.

For the week of December 22:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Wednesday: OFF – Merry Christmas Eve!

Thursday: Merry Christmas!

For the week of December 29:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Wednesday: OFF – Happy New Year’s Eve!

Thursday: Happy New Year! Rest and relax.

Friday: Pasta Party at the Jarvie’s – 18750 Kipheart Drive – 6:00-8:00 pm.

Saturday: Meet vs John Champe at Ashburn. Be at the pool, ready to swim at 11:45 am.

For the week of January 5:

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Wednesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm – King & Queen of the Pool!

Thursday: Team Meeting, 4:30-5:15 pm

Friday: Pasta Party at the Ndrue’s – 19223 Chartier Drive – 6:00-8:00 pm

Saturday: Briar Woods Invitational at Claude Moore. More information to come soon.

Enjoy your time with your family. Get some rest and get ready for the final Sprint of the Season!

Have a fantastic Holiday Season and Happy New Year.

Go Rams!

We had a great week of practice and some great swims yesterday against Stone Bridge. The Boys dominated the meet and the Girls earned their team’s first-ever tie – now each team has one!

We are entering the toughest stretch of our season over the next 3 weeks. This is where you can make or break a lot of your success that you’ve worked so hard for already. We have a meet on Saturday against Loudoun Valley and then a long break from racing, and our regular schedule. You need to come up with your plan for Winter Break for both in and out of the pool care – fitness, rest, and diet are important, and I think we saw the effects of some of our choices and planning in our energy-levels yesterday.

Over Winter Break, we will hold practices on December 22, 23, 29, and 30. I recognize that families planned trips, etc. during this time because of the holidays. Therefore, while I expect everyone to attend ALL practices, if you attend at least 2 of the 4 sessions, I will not count your absences as unexcused. However, there will be Boys vs Girls points to win each week and we’ll discuss that at Thursday’s meeting.

You have worked so hard over the last month to get into shape, and it shows! You cannot afford to take time off over break and lose what you’ve built for yourself. When we return after break we jump right into our most competitive meets of the season, and it goes quickly. You will not have time to rebuild and refocus. Keep things rolling!

On Friday night at the pasta party, the team is holding its “White Elephant” gift exchange. Each swimmer should bring a gift that costs no more than $25 for the game. If you have questions about how it will work, please see your Team Captains. They are the organizers of this fun event.

I’ll be posting Saturday’s line-up later today.

Here is your schedule for the week of December 15.

Monday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45-6:00 pm

Tuesday:  Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Wednesday: Practice at Lansdowne, 4:45 -6:00 pm

Thursday:  Team meeting, 4:30-5:15 pm

Friday:  Pasta Party at Pasta Party at Tragle’s House – 18737 Upper Meadow Dr – 6:00 pm

White Elephant Gift Exchange

Saturday: Swim Meet vs Loudoun Valley, warm-ups start at 12:00 pm at Ashburn. Be at the pool, ready to swim at 11:45 am.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we’ll see you at the pool Monday.

Rams,

I am thrilled with the start of our season this weekend. It was a tough way to get going – a double meet weekend and a strong District opponent – but you all showed why the Riverside Swim Teams are the best around. Your energy, your enthusiasm, and your amazing support for one another were incredible. AND, you had some great swims. Starting off 2-0 is great. Let’s keep it going!

As soon as I receive the final results file from yesterday’s meet with Broad Run, I will post it.

On Monday, Coach Kurt will be working with the Lane 2 swimmers on details and strategies to improve your swimming efficiency.

On Saturday, we take on the Stone Bridge Bulldogs. The meet lineup is posted to RiversideRams.net. https://bigteams-public-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/library/files/riversideathletics.bigteams_com_145966/files/20251213%20-%20Stone%20Bridge.pdf

RVHS Swim Week of December 1

Posted on 11/30/2025 | Joel Getis

Rams,

I hope you had a fun and relaxing Thanksgiving with your family and that you are ready to get things rolling this week. Because….HERE. WE. GO!!! The sprint of the regular season begins this week with a double meet weekend.

We have our first meet on Friday night against Lightridge, and it’s a big one to start things off. The Girl’s team will have a tough battle with a tough team that is the first hurdle in our attempt to repeat as District Champions. The Boy’s team is looking to lock in a significant number of state cut times and show our District challengers that Riverside is ready for the season. The theme for this meet is “Black Out”.

On Saturday, we take on Broad Run with the first-ever high school swim meet at the new Ashburn facility. This will be a lot of fun as we’ll be taking on Mr. Ahearn (Coach Kevin) and Mrs. Davies – Broad Run’s coaches, Riverside Swimmers, and the Lansdowne Lightning head coach. This meet’s theme is “Summer Swim”, so everyone should wear their summer team’s attire to the meet. Hopefully, we’ll get a good crowd of Lansdowne Lightning and Belmont Sharks kids to come and cheer us on.

Our season is always a weekly sprint, and this week is no different. Get ready to practice hard and get mentally and physically prepared for an amazing season of Riverside Rams Swimming. Monday’s practice will be our first strategy and tactics session with Coach Kurt. He’ll be working directly with the Lane 1 swimmers on Monday.

Parents have done an amazing job of filling our volunteer roles. Because of a last-minute scratch from Friday’s meet, we need one more timer. Here is the link for the lucky parent who wants to take this on.

All volunteer roles for Saturday have been filled. Thank you!!

I should have our swim caps to distribute to you at practice this week. If you ordered a white windbreaker, those are scheduled to arrive before our meet on December 13. The red quarter-zips have a late December expected delivery. If you ordered other spirit wear, that will be delivered to your house in 2-3 weeks.

Your fundraising efforts are going great. You’ve raised $2,100 – 84% of our goal of $2,500. Thank you! Please keep up the efforts and encourage friends and family to donate to the swim team. All funds raised go back to the team to pay for our pool rental, equipment, and team events.

RVHS Swim Week of 11/24/25

Posted on 11/23/2025 | Joel Getis

Rams,

Last week was a great start to our season. We spent 3 days working on fitness and habits, building the processes to help you to be successful. For many, practices were challenging and you showed that not only are you up to the challenge, but also you can thrive and be successful when you put your mind to it. Continue to work hard, focus on the details, and lead one another by example.

I read Bill Belichick’s book this summer and the following paragraph jumped out to me as directly applicable to our efforts and goals for success:

“(Y)ou cannot try to master a result. You must master a process. A good process results in good habits. Consistent good habits result in dependability. The goal is to have a good, consistent process—and good results will follow. Then, winning becomes a practice. And finally, a habit. In other words, when we prepare to win, we prepare to win all the time.”

Our number of practices is limited, so we must double-down on the focus and determination of the excellent athletes that we are to embrace the process and create the habits that will lead to our greatest successes possible.

This week is a short one. Come ready to work hard on Monday and Tuesday as you head into the holiday. Our meets start when we return from break, so get ready!

You have started our fundraising efforts well. You’ve raised $1,750 – 70% of our goal of $2,500. Thank you! Please keep up the efforts and encourage friends and family to donate to the swim team. All funds raised go back to the team to pay for our pool rental, equipment, and team events.

RVHS Swim Week of November 17

Posted on 11/16/2025 | Joel Getis

Rams,

Welcome to the 2024-25 Riverside Rams swim season.   Coach Gomez, Coach Kurt and I are excited to get started and to have a fantastic season.

We get things rolling with a busy schedule this week – first practices, team picture, parents meeting, and team meeting. Yes, that’s normal for the season that is definitely a sprint – a fun, fast, and fantastic time.

The Girls have jumped out to a 5-point lead for the Boys vs Girls Meet. The Girls have the lead for 15 of the 20 points available. Will the Boys recover quickly enough to mount a come-back?  Current situation (Concussion results are through 1:00 pm yesterday):

Report Cards – Girls-39% (11 to go); Boys 17% (20 to go)

Questionnaire – Girls 100%; Boys 75% (6 to go)

Payments – Girls 74% (4 to go); Boys 63% (9 to go)

Concussion – Girls 44% (10 to go); Boys 67% (8 to go)

Please remind your parents that the Riverside Winter Sports meeting is at school on Monday at 7:00 pm. All parents should attend so that they don’t miss any information from the athletic department (VHSL and LCPS rules and regulations).  In addition, there will be a swim team only session following the athletic department’s presentation. We’ll be meeting in the auditorium.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be getting in some great workouts as we prepare for our first meets on December 5 and 6.  We start the season with a double meet weekend -- Friday, December 5 is a a tough first meet against Lightridge and Saturday, December 6 is a fun meet with Broad Run (Mr. Ahearn and Mrs. Davies are the coaches there). and Be ready to practice HARD over the coming weeks. Your practice lane assignment is attached.

If you have not already done so, purchase/organize your equipment:  Suit, Goggles, Pull Buoys, Fins, and Snorkel.  https://www.swimoutlet.com/rvhsramsswim/ We will be using equipment on Wednesday, so make sure you have everything by then. Bring your equipment with you to every practice and make sure you have a water bottle (full) for each practice!

We always start and finish on time.  Do not be late. We are in the water and swimming right at the start of practice. Also, we request that all parents to please be at the pool to pick up your swimmers by 6:00 pm. This will avoid having swimmers (and coaches) standing outside in the cold waiting for pick-ups.

We welcome you to show your team spirit and demonstrate support for the team by purchasing and wearing some official Rams Swim Team gear.  The online store closes tomorrow, Monday, November 17. Your orders will be delivered to you at home.  There’s some great stuff available. Check it out!

If you have not paid for your team shirt, caps, or jackets, please do that immediately:
